2010 Rally on the Rocks: UTV Trail Riding in Moab

Rally on the Rocks brought side-by-side owners to Moab, Utah, for several days of guided trail rides across the area’s famous slickrock terrain. At the 2010 event, we explored Gold Bar Rim, Golden Spike, Moab Rim, Metal Masher, Gemini Bridges and Bull Canyon in a mix of Kawasaki Teryx and Polaris RZR models. By Jon Crowley Held May 12–15, 2010, Rally on the Rocks offered organized rides on 14 Moab-area trails. It was an opportunity to experience everything from scenic overlooks to steep ledges and technical rock obstacles alongside other UTV enthusiasts. This trip report preserves our photos and videos from three days on the trail.

Wednesday: Gold Bar Rim and Golden Spike

We opened the trip on Gold Bar Rim and Golden Spike. The route combined classic Moab slickrock, ledges, expansive views and the technical obstacles that have made this trail system a favorite among four-wheel-drive enthusiasts.

Thursday: Moab Rim Pit Bull Tire Run

Thursday’s Pit Bull Tire Run took us onto Moab Rim, a route that climbs quickly above the Colorado River. The trail delivered steep slickrock, tight ledges and outstanding views over Moab.

The day concluded with Rally on the Rocks participants receiving a police escort through Moab.

Friday: Metal Masher, Gemini Bridges and Bull Canyon

Friday combined the technical terrain of Metal Masher with stops at Widow Maker, Gemini Bridges and Bull Canyon. Metal Masher supplied the tougher driving challenges, while Gemini Bridges and Bull Canyon added some of the trip’s most memorable scenery.

The Drive Home

Even the trip home supplied an unexpected scene. Near Delta, Utah, we encountered a cattle drive traveling along US 50—a fitting finish to several memorable days in the West.

Some rides required participants to trailer their UTVs to the trailhead. The event also included nightly slideshows, raffles, UTV games and fundraising that benefited the Wounded Warrior Project and BlueRibbon Coalition.
