Introduced in 2014, the Polaris RANGER HIPPO transformed a diesel-powered utility side-by-side into a mobile power station capable of operating hydraulic, pneumatic, electric and welding equipment.
The specialized machine combined a Polaris RANGER CREW Diesel with the HIPPO 1041CP Multipower System. Instead of hauling separate generators, air compressors, hydraulic power units and welders into remote locations, crews could transport personnel, tools and four different sources of power in one off-road vehicle.

What Was the Polaris RANGER HIPPO?
The RANGER HIPPO was developed through a collaboration between Polaris and Mobile Hydraulic Equipment Company, the manufacturer of the HIPPO Multipower System. The concept was originally developed for military applications before being offered to railroads, utilities, municipalities, universities, emergency-response organizations, agricultural operations and other commercial customers.
Its defining feature was the integration of the HIPPO system with the RANGER’s 904cc Yanmar three-cylinder diesel engine. The vehicle’s engine powered the entire system, eliminating the need to maintain and fuel several separate pieces of equipment.
This was more than a cargo-box-mounted accessory. Polaris stated that the integration had to be completed during the vehicle’s manufacturing process, meaning the HIPPO system could not simply be installed on an existing RANGER CREW Diesel.

Four Types of Jobsite Power
The integrated HIPPO 1041CP supplied four forms of power from a single mobile platform:
- Hydraulic: One adjustable hydraulic tool circuit producing up to 8 gallons per minute at 2,000 psi
- Pneumatic: Approximately 40 cubic feet per minute at 100 psi through two quick-connect air fittings
- Electric: Up to 4.8 kVA peak and 4.4 kVA continuous output through two 120-volt outlets
- Welding: Up to 240 amps of DC stick-welding power through a dedicated welding console
Polaris said the system could operate HTMA Type II hydraulic tools, multiple pneumatic impact wrenches, electric saws, drills, work lights and welding equipment. Its 240-amp welding output was rated for welding steel up to approximately 3/8-inch thick.
The HIPPO system was also engineered for continuous-duty operation. Direct-coupled drive components and dedicated cooling equipment made it better suited to sustained industrial use than a collection of smaller consumer-grade power units.

Although the HIPPO equipment occupied a large portion of the rear platform, the RANGER retained a 500-pound cargo-box rating and could carry tools and supplies alongside its three-person crew. Its 2,000-pound towing capacity also allowed it to pull additional equipment into a work area.
Why the Integrated System Mattered
The RANGER HIPPO was designed for jobs where a conventional service truck was too large, heavy or difficult to maneuver. Potential applications included repairing rail infrastructure, maintaining pipelines and utilities, supporting emergency-response operations and servicing equipment on farms, mines or remote construction sites.
Consolidating the equipment into one vehicle offered several practical advantages. Operators only needed to transport and maintain one engine, store one primary fuel type and learn one operating platform. Crews could drive directly to the work area, position the RANGER and activate the required power system.
Polaris estimated that the nine-gallon fuel tank could provide approximately seven hours of operation at maximum load. Actual operating time would depend on the tools being used and the demands placed on the vehicle.

Is the Polaris RANGER HIPPO Still Available?
The exact 2014 RANGER CREW Diesel configuration covered here is no longer part of the regular Polaris consumer lineup. However, HIPPO Multipower continues to present a RANGER-based HIPPO system for specialized commercial and defense customers.
The concept has also evolved into a newer version based on the commercial-grade Polaris Pro XD Diesel. That machine follows the same fundamental formula by using the vehicle’s diesel engine to provide hydraulic, pneumatic, electric and welding power at remote worksites.
That continuation makes the original RANGER HIPPO more than an obscure 2014 product announcement. It was an early example of Polaris moving beyond recreational and agricultural UTVs to develop highly specialized off-road work platforms for industrial, fleet and defense applications.
Where the RANGER HIPPO Fits in Polaris History
Polaris introduced the original RANGER Diesel for the 2011 model year, giving commercial and agricultural users a utility vehicle that could share fuel with other diesel equipment. The HIPPO project demonstrated how that powertrain could support an even more specialized role.
Polaris later expanded its commercial offerings with the more fleet-focused Pro XD platform. Meanwhile, the standard RANGER family continued evolving into more powerful recreational and work vehicles with greater towing, cargo and cab capabilities.
