The 2016 Polaris RANGER XP 900 EPS High Lifter Edition brought the factory mud-machine concept to a three-seat utility UTV for the first time. Rather than adding only aggressive tires and special graphics, Polaris and High Lifter modified the gearing, driveline, intake system, suspension and underbody for wet, muddy conditions.
Introduced for the 2016 model year, the Stealth Black RANGER combined a 68-horsepower ProStar engine with 28-inch High Lifter Outlaw 2 tires, arched lower A-arms and 13 inches of ground clearance. It retained the cargo bed, bench seating and towing capability that made the RANGER XP 900 a work-oriented machine.
This model became an important step in the broader history of Polaris High Lifter and Mud Edition UTVs. It applied lessons from the original RZR XP 1000 High Lifter Edition to a platform designed to carry three occupants, haul cargo and tow equipment.

Built for Mud from the Factory
Polaris changed more than the appearance of the standard RANGER XP 900. Mud-specific reduced gearing helped the engine turn the aggressive Outlaw 2 tires, while a heavy-duty reverse chain addressed the increased driveline load encountered when backing out of deep mud.
The Pro-Lock On-Demand AWD system was calibrated for quicker four-wheel-drive engagement. This helped deliver power to the front wheels sooner when the rear tires began to lose traction.
Raised Intakes and Mud Protection
The engine intake, clutch intake and clutch outlet were positioned higher on the vehicle to reduce their exposure to water and mud. Polaris also routed vent lines through the cab frame, helping keep them away from water and accumulated debris.
An improved-drainage skid plate allowed water and mud to escape instead of collecting beneath the vehicle. Sealed electrical connections and protected switches provided additional durability in wet riding conditions.
Purpose-built front and rear mud bumpers helped protect the bodywork, while the factory-installed 4,500-pound winch supplied an essential recovery tool. Together, these features created a coordinated mud package without requiring an owner to modify a new RANGER immediately after purchase.
Outlaw 2 Tires and Arched A-Arms
High Lifter Outlaw 2 mud tires measured 28 x 9.5-14 in front and 28 x 11-14 at the rear. Their deep, widely spaced tread was designed to reach for traction and clear mud as the tires rotated.
Arched lower A-arms increased clearance near the wheels, where conventional straight suspension arms are particularly vulnerable to catching deep ruts. The combination of the arched arms, larger tires and revised chassis dimensions gave the RANGER 13 inches of ground clearance.
The High Lifter Edition was also wider and longer than a conventional 2016 RANGER XP 900. Overall dimensions measured 123 inches long, 66.5 inches wide and 77 inches tall, with an 83-inch wheelbase.
A Mud UTV That Retained RANGER Utility
The defining difference between this model and the sport-oriented RZR XP 1000 High Lifter Edition was its utility capability. The RANGER retained a three-person bench seat, 1,000-pound cargo-box capacity, 1,500-pound payload rating and 2,000-pound towing capacity.
That combination allowed the machine to work around farms, hunting properties and job sites while also arriving with the hardware needed for recreational mud riding. Electronic power steering helped manage the steering effort created by the heavy, aggressive tires.
Why the 2016 RANGER High Lifter Edition Mattered
The 2016 RANGER XP 900 High Lifter Edition proved that a purpose-built mud package did not have to be limited to a sport side-by-side. Polaris and High Lifter brought mud-specific engineering to a practical utility platform without removing the capabilities that made the RANGER useful.
Polaris later moved the package to the more powerful XP 1000 platform, eventually offering both three-seat and six-seat High Lifter Editions. Those models and the original XP 900 helped establish the formula that Polaris revisited with the 2027 Polaris RANGER XP 1000 Mud Edition.
