Large events rely on specialized utility vehicles behind the scenes, and Super Bowl XLII was no exception. This John Deere Gator TH 6×4 was equipped as a compact fire-response and rescue vehicle for the event at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona.
UTVGuide.net photographed the six-wheel Gator during the Super Bowl festivities in February 2008. The New York Giants defeated the previously unbeaten New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLII, but away from the field, utility vehicles like this one helped support the extensive safety and emergency-response operation surrounding the event.
A Compact Fire-Rescue Gator
The vehicle was based on the John Deere Gator TH 6×4, a work-focused utility vehicle known for its low cargo-box loading height, substantial payload capacity and six-wheel drivetrain. Its compact dimensions allowed it to travel through areas that would have been difficult to reach with a conventional fire engine or rescue truck.
The Gator carried a KIMTEK FireLite skid unit incorporating firefighting and patient-transport equipment. Major components visible on the build included:
- Aluminum diamond-plate skid structure
- Integrated poly water tank
- Gas-powered high-pressure water pump
- Hannay manual-crank hose reel
- Booster hose
- Storage for firefighting hose, nozzles and related equipment
- Rear rescue area designed to carry a backboard or Stokes basket
This combination allowed the Gator to carry water and firefighting equipment while retaining space for emergency medical or rescue work. A vehicle this size could respond within parking areas, service corridors and other congested locations where maneuverability was especially valuable.

Period specifications for the gasoline-powered Gator TH 6×4 included:
- 675cc air-cooled V-twin four-cycle gasoline engine
- Six-wheel configuration with four driven rear wheels
- Rear differential lock for additional traction
- Approximately 20-mph top speed
- 1,000-pound cargo-box capacity
- 1,400-pound towing capacity on level terrain
- Steel cargo box with approximately 11.2 cubic feet of capacity
- Rear wet-disc brakes
The TH 6×4 was not designed for high-speed recreational riding. Its strengths were stability, low-speed maneuverability and the ability to carry a substantial load. Those characteristics made it a practical platform for fire departments, emergency medical teams and large-event support crews.
Gators as Emergency-Response Vehicles
Fire and rescue conversions demonstrate how far a utility vehicle can extend the reach of a conventional emergency fleet. Properly equipped Gators can transport personnel, water and medical equipment across parks, industrial properties, sporting venues and other locations with restricted vehicle access.
