Originally published May 6, 2014. SuperATV developed these +4-inch rear trailing arms for the original Can-Am Commander platform, giving owners additional tire clearance and a longer wheelbase without converting to a conventional wide long-travel suspension system.
The extended arms moved the rear wheels four inches rearward while maintaining the Commander’s factory suspension alignment. SuperATV promoted the design for riders looking to fit larger tires, improve climbing stability and give the machine a more stretched stance.
This product was designed for the first-generation Can-Am Commander, which was produced for the 2011 through 2020 model years. It should not be confused with parts made for the redesigned Commander introduced for 2021.
Room for Tires Up to 33 Inches
According to SuperATV, the extended trailing arms provided enough additional clearance to run tires up to 33 inches tall without a suspension lift. The arms were also compatible with lift kits, although actual tire clearance could vary with wheel offset, tire construction, suspension settings and other modifications.
Extending the wheelbase could improve stability on steep climbs, but it also changed the vehicle’s dimensions and breakover characteristics. Owners considering this type of modification should confirm tire clearance throughout the full range of suspension and steering movement.
Preinstalled Bearings
Each kit originally included 10 preinstalled bearings:
- Eight trailing-arm pivot bearings
- Two rear wheel bearings
Including the bearings reduced the amount of hardware that had to be transferred from the factory arms and simplified installation. At the time of release, SuperATV valued the included bearings at $380.
Construction and Installation
SuperATV designed the arms using CAD modeling before TIG welding and powder coating the completed assemblies. The kit was engineered to retain the factory sway bar and maintain the original suspension alignment.
The extended trailing arms were intended for use with SuperATV Rhino Brand axles rather than the original-length factory axles. Because suspension modifications affect driveline geometry, owners should verify axle compatibility and inspect brake lines, sway-bar hardware and tire clearance during installation.
