Rather than concentrating its performance at low engine speeds, the YXZ engine was designed to rev. Its 10,500-rpm redline and distinctive three-cylinder exhaust note helped give the vehicle a character unlike anything else in the sport UTV market.

Throttle response is direct and predictable, but drivers accustomed to turbocharged sport UTVs should not expect the same surge of low-rpm torque. The YXZ makes its performance higher in the rev range and works best when the driver selects the appropriate gear and keeps the engine spinning.

That power delivery is part of the YXZ1000R’s appeal. It demands more participation from the driver, but it can also be more rewarding when driven well.

A high-mounted, high-volume air intake feeds a dual-filter system consisting of an oiled foam filter and a pleated paper filter. The reusable foam filter can be accessed without tools, helping simplify inspection and maintenance after riding in dusty conditions.

The YXZ1000R also uses a stainless-steel three-into-one exhaust system with an integrated catalytic converter and removable spark arrestor. In stock form, the exhaust complements the engine’s high-rpm character without relying on forced induction to produce its distinctive sound.

Five-Speed Sequential Transmission

The transmission is the defining feature of the Yamaha YXZ1000R. When introduced, it was the first production side-by-side equipped with a fully manual five-speed sequential transmission.

YXZ1000R Manual vs. YXZ1000R SS

Yamaha eventually offered two distinctly different ways to operate the YXZ1000R transmission.

YXZ1000R Manual Transmission

The YXZ1000R SS uses steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters and an electronically controlled clutch. Drivers still select each gear, but the vehicle operates the clutch automatically.

Based on our experience in the dunes, desert, wooded trails and rocks, the Sport Shift version is easier to manage across a wider range of terrain. It eliminates the concern of stalling the engine, allows shifts without removing a hand from the steering wheel and makes it faster to transition between forward and reverse.

On-Command Four-Wheel Drive

The YXZ1000R uses Yamaha’s driver-controlled On-Command four-wheel-drive system. A console-mounted selector provides three operating modes:

  • Two-wheel drive
  • Four-wheel drive
  • Four-wheel drive with the front differential locked

The front suspension towers project through openings in the hood, giving the YXZ its distinctive appearance. At the rear, the shocks are mounted far outboard to provide a favorable motion ratio and help control wheel movement. Front and rear sway bars help keep the vehicle composed through fast corners.

The YXZ does not have the extreme suspension travel or wide stance of newer 72-inch sport UTVs. The Major 2019 Yamaha YXZ1000R Update

Yamaha made the most important changes in the model’s history for 2019. Although the basic engine, transmission and chassis concept remained familiar, the updates made the YXZ more comfortable, capable and practical.

  • Lower gearing: First gear was lowered substantially, while the remaining gear ratios were adjusted to compensate for the larger tires.
  • 29-inch tires: Yamaha replaced the original 27-inch tires with larger 29-inch Maxxis Bighorn tires.

Styling, Chassis and Bodywork

The Yamaha YXZ1000R’s exterior design reflects its pure-sport purpose. Its low roofline, angular bodywork, exposed front shock towers and compact rear body give it a distinctive appearance that remains recognizable even after production has ended.

The front bodywork provides good visibility of the terrain ahead, which is especially useful when navigating technical trails or placing a tire near an obstacle. Four LED projector headlights were included on the original model, along with an LED taillight.

The fixed rear cargo area is rated to carry up to 300 pounds and includes a sealed storage compartment and four tie-down points welded to the frame. The YXZ was never intended to offer the cargo capacity of a recreational or utility UTV, but the rear area provides enough space for tools, recovery equipment and essential riding gear.

Color-matched doors use automotive-style latches and help provide a more enclosed feeling than the minimal half doors found on some early sport UTVs. Yamaha also included a factory sun top that follows the shape of the roll cage.

Cab and Ergonomics

The YXZ1000R uses a low, cockpit-like seating position that reinforces its sports-car character. The contoured high-back seats provide good support, while the driver receives an adjustable seat and tilt steering wheel.

The original manual-transmission model has throttle, brake and clutch pedals. This three-pedal arrangement was unique within the production side-by-side market. The Sport Shift version eliminates the clutch pedal but retains the same basic driver-focused cockpit.

Legroom and shoulder room are good for a compact two-seat sport UTV. Integrated bolsters, passenger handholds and enclosed floorboards help occupants feel planted inside the vehicle. Dunes

The YXZ is entertaining in the dunes, but its naturally aspirated engine needs rpm and momentum. Drivers must remain attentive to gear selection because shifting too early can drop the engine out of the strongest part of its powerband.

2017 YXZ1000R Special Edition and FOX Podium X2 Shocks

For 2017, Yamaha equipped the Special Edition YXZ1000R and YXZ1000R SS with FOX 2.5 Podium X2 shocks. Developed specifically for the YXZ platform, the twin-tube shocks provided a wide range of suspension adjustments.

The FOX X2 package included independently adjustable high- and low-speed compression damping, high- and low-speed rebound damping, dual-rate springs, adjustable crossovers and position-sensitive damping. Suspension travel remained 16.2 inches in front and 17 inches at the rear.
