The Holz/Coastal Racing Polaris RZR XP 900 captured the 2012 Best in the Desert UTV Championship and became the first UTV to complete the 534-mile Vegas to Reno race in under 12 hours.
A Championship-Winning RZR XP 900
The Holz/Coastal Racing #1934 Polaris RZR XP 900 was one of the most successful UTV race builds of 2012. Driven by Scott Kiger, Mark Holz and William Yokley, the team secured the Best in the Desert UTV Championship after a season that included a milestone victory at Vegas to Reno.
The team completed the grueling 534-mile desert race in 11 hours and 41 minutes, becoming the first UTV team to finish Vegas to Reno in less than 12 hours.
That performance demonstrated just how quickly the Polaris RZR XP 900 was developing into a legitimate desert-racing platform. Its 875cc ProStar engine, trailing-arm rear suspension and compact 64-inch chassis provided a strong starting point, while Holz Racing Products transformed the production machine into a purpose-built race UTV.
Built by Holz Racing Products
Holz Racing Products developed the custom chassis, suspension components, protection and supporting hardware needed to survive long-distance desert racing. The build retained the stock Polaris drivetrain, hubs and brakes while adding a Kroyer Racing Engines powerplant, upgraded cooling, competition suspension and a desert-ready wheel-and-tire package.
Walker Evans Racing shocks helped control the RZR through high-speed desert terrain, while Holz A-arms and trailing arms strengthened the suspension. A custom fuel cell, Ron Davis Racing radiator and UMP air-filter canister were added to support the car during extended races.
Inside, the race team relied on a Recaro seat, MasterCraft five-point restraints and PCI Race Radios navigation and communication equipment. A fresh-air system helped the occupants manage dust and heat during long hours in the car.

A Milestone in Polaris RZR Racing History
The Holz/Coastal Racing championship came during an important period in the development of sport UTV racing. Introduced for the 2011 model year, the RZR XP 900 brought a major increase in horsepower, suspension performance and high-speed capability compared with earlier recreational side-by-sides.
Successful builds like this one showed what the XP 900 platform could accomplish when equipped for professional desert racing. The combination of a BITD championship and the first sub-12-hour UTV finish at Vegas to Reno helped establish the XP 900 as one of the most influential machines in Polaris RZR history.
