The 2012 Sand Sports Super Show arrived at the OC Fair & Event Center in Costa Mesa, California, just as sport side-by-sides were beginning to reshape the dune industry. The 14th annual show was filled with new UTVs, custom builds, suspension systems, tires, lighting and audio equipment—and it was clear that UTVs were no longer a small corner of the sand-sports market.
UTVGuide.net exhibited at the show with our 2011 Kawasaki Teryx project. Our new 2013 Polaris RZR XP 900 LE was displayed by Fullerton Sand Sports, while our 2012 Kawasaki Teryx4 project appeared in the SSV Works booth.
What Stood Out at the 2012 Show
Can-Am Maverick and Maverick MAX Debut
The biggest vehicle news came Friday night when Can-Am introduced the Maverick 1000R, Maverick 1000R X rs and four-seat Maverick MAX 1000R. With a claimed 101 horsepower and long-travel suspension, the original Maverick immediately raised expectations for dune-focused sport UTV performance.
30-Inch UTV Tires Arrive
The growing selection of 30x10R14 tires was another important development. ITP displayed the UltraCross, GBC showed the Kanati Mongrel and STI displayed the Rocktane XD. At the time, many owners who wanted tires this large were still adapting light-truck tires; these purpose-built UTV choices showed where the market was headed.
American Sand Association RZR Raffle
Polaris supported the American Sand Association with two raffle vehicles for 2012–2013: a RZR XP 4 built by RideNow and a RZR S. The display connected the rapid growth of sport UTVs with the continuing work required to protect public dune access.
FOX 2.5 Podium X Shocks
FOX displayed its 2.5-inch Podium X aluminum-body shock with position-sensitive damping and bottom-out control. The larger shock body was intended to increase damping capacity and reduce heat-related fade—technology that reflected the increasing speed and weight of sport UTVs.
Modified Arctic Cat Wildcats
The recently introduced Arctic Cat Wildcat 1000 was already becoming a serious aftermarket platform. D&P Performance and Muzzys displayed heavily modified Wildcats with big-bore engine work, exhaust systems and dune-oriented upgrades.
STU Razor Blaster Front Sand Tires
Fullerton Sand Sports displayed the new STU Razor Blaster front tires paired with STU Blaster rear paddles. Mounted on HiPer beadlock wheels, the setup gave RZR XP owners a coordinated tire package developed specifically for the dunes.
Four Kawasaki Teryx4 Builds
Four very different Kawasaki Teryx4 builds illustrated how quickly the new four-seat platform had been embraced. The group included our SSV Works build along with Teryx4s associated with Joey, Reid and Kawasaki racer Ryan Villopoto.
LED Lighting Takes Over
Baja Designs, Rigid Industries and Vision X demonstrated how quickly LED lighting was replacing older off-road lighting technology. Compact light bars and pods delivered more output with lower electrical demand—an especially useful combination for accessory-heavy UTVs.

American Sand Association
The American Sand Association partnered with Sand Limo and Polaris for the 2012–2013 raffle program. Beyond the display vehicles, the organization’s presence was a reminder that keeping public dunes open depends on organized advocacy and responsible recreation.
Why the 2012 Show Matters
Looking back, the 2012 Sand Sports Super Show captured a turning point. Polaris had established the RZR XP as the performance benchmark, Arctic Cat’s Wildcat had pushed suspension travel and chassis size forward, and Can-Am used the show to introduce a direct high-horsepower competitor. Around those machines, the aftermarket was rapidly developing larger UTV-specific tires, more capable shocks, turbo systems, LED lighting, audio systems and increasingly ambitious four-seat builds.
The show floor made the direction of the market unmistakable: sport UTVs had become central to modern dune recreation.
