Rugged Radios WM1 Wireless Music Interface

Rugged Radios Wireless Music Interface

Originally published September 18, 2014. The Rugged Radios WM1 is a legacy product and may no longer be available new. This article has been updated to preserve its place in the development of modern UTV communications.

The Rugged Radios WM1 Wireless Interface Module gave UTV owners a simple way to stream music from a Bluetooth-equipped phone or media player through a compatible in-vehicle intercom. Introduced in 2014, it added wireless audio without requiring riders to replace an existing intercom system.

The compact module plugged into the back of compatible Rugged Radios intercoms through a rear AUX port or Molex connector. Once paired with a Bluetooth device, it routed music through the intercom and connected headsets or helmet speakers.

Rugged Radios WM1 Features

  • Wireless connection to compatible Bluetooth devices
  • Claimed operating range of up to 40 feet
  • Wireless music streaming through the vehicle intercom
  • Simple Bluetooth pairing
  • Compatibility with select intercoms using a rear AUX port or Molex connector

How the WM1 Connected

Installation involved connecting the WM1 to the appropriate intercom port and installing its inline cable. With the intercom powered on, the user selected “WM1” from the phone or music player’s available Bluetooth devices and entered the original pairing code of “0000.” Music could then be streamed through the intercom system.

From an Add-On Module to Integrated Bluetooth

The WM1 represents an early generation of wireless audio integration for off-road intercoms. Bluetooth music capability that once required a separate module is now incorporated into many complete communication packages, making it easier to combine in-car conversation, music and car-to-car radio communications.

Current systems also do considerably more than play music. An intercom lets occupants communicate without shouting over engine and wind noise, while a two-way radio helps a group stay together, call out approaching traffic, warn other drivers about trail hazards and prevent riders from missing turns.
