Polaris reached an important international milestone in September 2014 when it opened a new manufacturing facility in Opole, Poland. The plant was the company’s first facility dedicated to building off-road vehicles outside North America and established a regional production base for Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
Polaris Expands Manufacturing Beyond North America
Before the Opole plant opened, Polaris produced its off-road vehicles in North America. Establishing a factory in Poland allowed the company to manufacture vehicles closer to its European, Middle Eastern and African customers while reducing shipping distances and order lead times.
Polaris also intended the facility to support regional engineering, vehicle development and homologation—the process of ensuring vehicles meet the regulations required for sale in individual markets. That gave the company greater flexibility to tailor its off-road vehicles to the needs and legal requirements of different countries.
The significance of the project earned it a place on the official Polaris company history timeline, alongside major product introductions and other manufacturing expansions.
Inside the Original Opole Facility
The plant opened with approximately 345,000 square feet of space on nearly 30 acres within the Wałbrzych Special Economic Zone in Opole. Construction took just over a year, with approximately 15 months passing between the signing of the building contract and the beginning of production.
Notable features of the original facility included:
- Capacity for as many as 500 employees
- A 2,500-meter vehicle test track
- Metal and plastic painting operations
- Vehicle welding and assembly areas
- Energy-saving paint systems
- Regional research, development and homologation capabilities
Polaris initially planned to build approximately 35 off-road vehicle models at Opole and distribute them through subsidiaries and distributors across the EMEA region. The company expected the plant to employ approximately 300 people during 2015.
RZR, RANGER and GENERAL Production
As the factory developed, its operations included assembly lines for Polaris RZR, RANGER and GENERAL side-by-sides, along with Sportsman ATVs and the now-discontinued Polaris ACE. Chassis welding, painting, assembly and vehicle testing were performed at the facility.
Polaris reported in 2018 that the plant was producing both ATVs and side-by-sides each day. Completed vehicles underwent functional checks before being packaged for distribution, while selected units received additional quality-control inspections.
The factory also became Polaris’ first manufacturing operation certified under the ISO 9001 quality-management standard.
Polaris Expands Its Opole Operations
The Opole operation continued growing after the original factory opened. In 2017, Polaris added a distribution center covering approximately 17,500 square meters, or about 188,000 square feet. This expanded the site beyond manufacturing and strengthened its role as a distribution hub for Polaris products throughout the region.
By 2018, the factory employed more than 300 people and had produced nearly 40,000 vehicles. Polaris reported in 2021 that employment had grown to more than 580 people and cumulative production had surpassed 100,000 units.
Why the Poland Factory Mattered
The Opole factory represented more than an increase in production capacity. It marked a shift toward localized manufacturing for one of Polaris’ most important international regions.
Building vehicles in Europe allowed Polaris to shorten portions of its supply chain, source more components within the region and respond more directly to local market requirements. The plant’s engineering, testing and homologation capabilities also helped Polaris adapt American-developed platforms for customers operating under different vehicle regulations.
More than a decade after its grand opening, Opole remains one of the notable milestones in Polaris history. The factory demonstrated how the Minnesota-based manufacturer was evolving from a primarily North American powersports company into a global producer of ATVs and side-by-sides.
