HCR Racing Can-Am Commander Long-Travel Kit: 2011 Launch

Long Travel Can-AM Commander

When the Can-Am Commander arrived, aftermarket builders quickly began exploring how much more suspension performance the new side-by-side could offer. In May 2011, HCR Racing announced a long-travel kit for the Commander with a wider stance, longer wheelbase and custom-tuned King shocks.

Historical product note: This article documents HCR’s 2011 announcement. The $4,599 price was the announced price at that time, not a current quote. We could not find a Commander long-travel kit in HCR Racing’s current Can-Am catalog. Contact HCR directly if you are looking for parts or support for an existing kit.

What the 2011 HCR Commander Kit Included

According to HCR’s original announcement, the complete long-travel package was designed to bolt to the Commander’s factory mounting points. Its listed components and construction features included:

  • Custom-tuned King 2.0 reservoir shocks
  • Summers Brothers Racing 4340 extended axles
  • Boxed A-arms with hand TIG welding
  • Laser-cut components and CNC-machined chromoly mounting points
  • Factory-style ball joints

HCR said the kit increased width by six inches per side and lengthened the wheelbase by three inches. The company claimed more than 16 inches of front wheel travel and 14 inches of rear wheel travel. These figures describe the kit as announced in 2011; fitment and specifications should be confirmed with HCR before purchasing used components or planning a restoration.

A Snapshot of Early Commander Development

The kit reflects the rapid aftermarket development that followed the original Commander’s introduction. Its wider track and longer wheelbase were intended to add stability, while the extended suspension travel and shock package targeted rough terrain.
