Family Trip to the Oregon Dunes
On the Way to the Dunes
Our Camping Area at the Dunes – KOA Campground – North Bend, OR
The KOA Kampground is in North Bend. This section of the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area is the southern -most of the three dune areas. The other two areas are Winchester Bay and Florence. The KOA is situated just off of US Highway 101 north of Hauser and south of Spinreel. The campground is alright, but a bit more grass and trees would really help. The worst part of the KOA is the long road to get to the dunes. If you are running a new set of paddle tires on your UTV, you are going to cringe each time you head out to the dunes. A good part of the way is either road or pavement. The other thing I didn’t like is the completely whooped out trail getting to the beach. The Hauser Beach Access Road has to be one of the longest section of whoops I have ever been on. In the Dunes: UTV parts & service near the Coos Bay dunes: Steve’s ATV Rentals (Hauser Road at the KOA turnoff) – Rents Polaris Ranger Crew, Polaris RZR and Yamaha Rhino. Also offers parts and service for UTVs. Bay Area Yamaha Parker’s ATV Polaris Farwest Kawasaki Suzuki Side Trips: Sea Lion Caves – Located 11 miles north of Florenceon U.S. Hwy 101, the Sea Lion Caves is America’s largest sea cave. The cave floor is two acres and the cavern reaches a height of 125 feet. The cave is reached via an elevator that covers 215 ft. and was opened in 1961. The cave was a bit over-priced ($32 for a family of four), and I thought that you would have been able to see more of the cave. But it was raining all day, so we did a bunch of tourist stuff. West Coast Game Park -Located 7 miles south of Bandon on U.S. Hwy 101, the West Coast Game Park is a walk through safari. Links: |
