UTV Takeover has grown to several different events across the United States, but it all started back in the Oregon Dunes at Boxcar Hill Campground. Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area is made up of three different dune complexes, and Boxcar Hill is part of the southernmost dune which is most often referred to as Coos Bay. The other two dunes are Winchester bay and Florence and it is worth noting that you cannot drive off-road between these dunes.

A Virtual Tour of Oregon’s Coos Bay Sand DunesRiding the Oregon Dunes should be on the bucket list of every UTV enthusiast. The combination of open sand, lush greenery and freshwater lakes create one of the most unique duning environments in the country. The Coos Bay sand dunes are the largest of three areas comprising the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area which includes the Florence Dunes to the north as well as the Winchester Bay sand dunes, host site for Oregon’s annual DuneFest event.
2018 marks the third year for UTV Takeover, and what makes this dune event unique is that it is free to attend. There is a charge for camping, but all activities are free.

Short Course Racing
2017 UTV Takeover Short Course RaceThe Sand Outlaws UTV Short Course at the 2017 UTV Takeover saw almost 30 competitors. Two drivers set off simultaneously on the same track while driving on two separate but equal lanes. The course took the space of about two football fields and contained elevation changes, sharp corners, jumps and crossovers. After a test lap the racers were ready for action. The race was setup as a single elimination event where the loser becomes a spectator.
