The 2014 Can-Am Maverick 1000R X mr brought Can-Am’s mud-specific X mr treatment to its original two-seat sport UTV. It combined the Maverick’s 101-horsepower Rotax V-twin with 30-inch mud tires, elevated engine and CVT air routing, an adjustable air suspension and a factory-installed winch.
Introduced for the 2014 model year, the X mr expanded the Maverick beyond the original base and X rs packages. It was built for riders who wanted the performance of the Can-Am Maverick 1000R in deep mud, standing water and other low-speed terrain that placed different demands on the drivetrain and suspension.

Purpose-Built Maverick Mud Package
The Maverick 1000R X mr was more than a standard Maverick fitted with aggressive tires. Can-Am recalibrated the CVT for mud use, moved the engine and transmission air openings higher in the vehicle and installed a mud-ready CVT cover. It also received faster-engaging Visco-Lok QE, Tri-Mode Dynamic Power Steering and an adjustable Air Control Suspension system.
These features made the X mr one of the first specialized models in the growing first-generation Maverick family. For a broader look at the platform and the models that followed, see our first-generation Can-Am Maverick 1000R history and model guide.
101-Horsepower Rotax 1000R Engine
Power came from the same 976cc liquid-cooled Rotax V-twin used in the original Maverick 1000R. Can-Am rated the engine at 101 horsepower, making the X mr a significant step beyond the recreation-utility machines traditionally converted for mud riding.
The engine was paired with a continuously variable transmission offering high and low ranges, park, neutral and reverse. Engine braking was standard. Can-Am gave the X mr a mud-specific CVT calibration intended to turn its taller, heavier 30-inch tires in difficult conditions.
The CVT compartment used a 13-bolt cover designed to improve sealing. An accessible drain plug allowed water to be removed from the housing if it entered during a particularly deep crossing or mud hole.
Elevated Engine and CVT Air Routing
Can-Am positioned the engine air intake, CVT intake and CVT exhaust high on the Maverick 1000R X mr. Raising these critical openings helped reduce their exposure to mud, water and debris while maintaining the airflow required to cool the engine and belt-driven transmission.
This integrated routing was an important distinction from an aftermarket snorkel conversion. The system was engineered as part of the complete vehicle and matched to its engine and CVT airflow requirements.

Air Control Suspension With FOX Shocks
>One of the X mr’s most distinctive features was its Air Control Suspension, or ACS. The system paired an onboard air compressor with FOX Air Assist HPG piggyback shocks at all four corners.
The driver could choose from six preload settings, providing a total adjustment range of approximately four inches. This made it possible to change the vehicle’s ride height and suspension preload for varying terrain or loads without stopping to make a conventional mechanical adjustment.
The onboard compressor also included an auxiliary hose that could be used to inflate a tire or another low-volume accessory on the trail.

30-Inch Gorilla Axle Silverback Tires
The 2014 Maverick X mr rode on 30-inch Gorilla Axle Silverback tires mounted to 14-inch ITP SS312 cast-aluminum wheels. The Silverback’s tall, widely spaced lugs were designed to dig through soft mud while clearing packed material from the tread.
These were the same model of tires Can-Am used on its Outlander 1000 X mr ATV. Their extra diameter also increased ground clearance beneath the Maverick, although the aggressive tread and additional rotating mass were primarily chosen for mud performance rather than high-speed hardpack handling.

Tri-Mode DPS and Visco-Lok QE
Tri-Mode Dynamic Power Steering allowed the driver to choose between three levels of steering assistance. The system was calibrated to provide more assistance at low speeds and less assistance as vehicle speed increased.
This was particularly useful with the X mr’s large, aggressive front tires, which required more steering effort than the 27-inch trail tires fitted to a standard Maverick.
The X mr also received Can-Am’s Visco-Lok QE front differential. The quicker-engaging calibration progressively transferred power away from a slipping front wheel and toward the wheel with traction. Operation was automatic, with no separate differential-lock switch for the driver to manage.

Factory WARN Winch and X-Package Equipment
A 4,000-pound WARN winch was standard equipment. The installation included a roller fairlead, wired remote control and integrated storage for the remote. A protective front bumper complemented the winch and helped shield the front of the vehicle in rough terrain.
Additional X-package equipment included a combined analog and digital gauge, a custom three-spoke steering wheel with a brushed-aluminum center, special seat upholstery and yellow-and-black graphics.

The Maverick X mr’s Place in Can-Am History
The 2014 Maverick 1000R X mr established a formula Can-Am would continue developing: take its high-performance Maverick platform and engineer a complete factory package around mud riding rather than treating mud equipment as an aftermarket addition.
Can-Am subsequently expanded the first-generation Maverick family with additional two- and four-seat models, terrain-specific packages and factory turbocharging. The original X mr remains notable for combining the early Maverick’s 101-horsepower drivetrain with unusually specialized equipment, including its adjustable air suspension and 30-inch Silverback tires.
