The 2007 Arctic Cat Prowler 650 combined the company’s ATV-derived four-wheel-drive hardware with side-by-side seating, a tilting cargo bed and useful towing capacity. It was designed as a utility UTV that could handle work around a property while still delivering capable recreational trail performance.
Arctic Cat introduced the original Prowler XT in 2005. For 2007, the company expanded the Prowler 650 lineup by offering both the better-equipped XT and a more basic standard model. Both versions were powered by Arctic Cat’s 641cc liquid-cooled single-cylinder engine.
641cc Single-Cylinder Engine and CVT
The Prowler 650 used a 641cc, four-stroke, single-overhead-cam engine with liquid cooling and a thermostatically controlled fan. The large single-cylinder engine emphasized usable low-end torque for hauling, towing and negotiating difficult terrain.
An automatic continuously variable transmission provided High, Low, Neutral and Reverse ranges. The Prowler could operate in two-wheel drive or four-wheel drive, while the Prowler XT added a locking front differential for improved traction in mud, rocks and other low-grip conditions.
Independent Suspension and Ground Clearance
Double-A-arm independent suspension was fitted at all four corners, with 10 inches of front and rear wheel travel. Spring-preload-adjustable shocks allowed the suspension to be adjusted for different loads and operating conditions.
Arctic Cat listed 12.5 inches of ground clearance, which was substantial for an early utility side-by-side. The Prowler XT also included a rear sway bar to improve stability and handling on trails.
The XT rode on 14-inch cast-aluminum wheels, while the standard Prowler used 14-inch steel wheels. Both versions used 26-inch tires, with 26×9-14 tires in front and 26×11-14 tires at the rear.
Cab, Storage and Passenger Features
The open cab included two individual bucket seats, driver and passenger seat belts and a protective overhead structure with a roof. A center console incorporated cupholders and two 12-volt accessory outlets.
Additional storage included a dashboard tray, a glove box and a molded tool kit beneath the passenger seat. A compartment under the hood provided another 25 pounds of storage capacity and could also be used as an ice-filled cooler.
Cargo and Towing Capacity
The Prowler’s composite tilting cargo bed resisted rust and was rated to carry up to 600 pounds. Its 1,500-pound towing capacity made the Prowler useful for moving trailers, equipment and supplies around farms, ranches, hunting properties and recreational areas.
Those work-oriented capabilities helped distinguish the Prowler from the increasingly recreational side-by-side models entering the market during the same period.

Where the Prowler 650 Fits in UTV History
The Prowler 650 arrived while the side-by-side market was still centered largely on utility machines. Its independent suspension, substantial ground clearance and bucket-seat cockpit gave it a more recreational character than many early work-focused UTVs, while its cargo and towing ratings preserved the practicality expected from the category.
Arctic Cat subsequently expanded the Prowler family with larger-displacement and more specialized models, including the Prowler XTX 700, Prowler XTZ 1000, HDX and compact Prowler 500. The original 650 remains an important early step in Arctic Cat’s transition from ATVs into the broader side-by-side market.
