The 2023 Polaris RZR Pro R Factory marked a major change in how Polaris approached UTV racing. Instead of supporting independent teams racing modified production vehicles, Polaris developed a purpose-built desert race UTV and created a dedicated factory team around it.
Based on the production Polaris RZR Pro R, the original Pro R Factory combined the 225-horsepower ProStar Fury 2.0-liter engine with a specialized race chassis, rear-mounted cooling system, 35-inch tires and race-tuned DYNAMIX DV suspension. It was engineered specifically for long-distance events including the SCORE Baja series and Best in the Desert’s Vegas to Reno.
This vehicle became the foundation for one of the most successful factory programs in UTV racing. It also represented an important milestone in the broader history of the Polaris RZR.
Why Polaris Built the RZR Pro R Factory
Before the Pro R Factory program, Polaris racing efforts largely revolved around production-based RZRs built and campaigned by independent race teams. The new vehicle took a different approach. Polaris engineered the race UTV itself, assembled a dedicated factory operation and recruited drivers to compete under one unified program.
The concept was closer to an OEM trophy-truck program than a conventional production UTV race effort. Polaris developed four Pro R Factory vehicles for the program’s inaugural season, with Austin Weiland, Brock Heger and Cayden MacCachren selected as the team’s original drivers.
“Every legitimate factory racing program has been built around the development of a purpose-built race vehicle, and that’s exactly what we’re doing with the RZR Pro R Factory,” said Reid Wilson, then Vice President of Polaris Off Road Recreation.
The timing followed an important proof point for the production platform. Branden Sims won the 2022 SCORE Baja 1000 UTV Overall in a RZR Pro R, demonstrating that the new 2.0-liter platform could survive Baja before Polaris committed to its dedicated factory race vehicle.

Race-Tuned 2.0-Liter ProStar Fury Engine
The original RZR Pro R Factory retained the basic architecture of the production Pro R’s naturally aspirated ProStar Fury engine. In stock form, the 1,997cc four-cylinder produced 225 horsepower, making it a substantial starting point for a desert race vehicle.
Polaris supported the engine with a race-calibrated driveline, race-tuned transmission and large rear-mounted radiators. Moving the cooling system behind the cockpit helped increase cooling capacity while relocating vulnerable components away from the vehicle’s front end.
The naturally aspirated engine also offered predictable throttle response and avoided the additional heat and plumbing associated with a turbocharger. Those characteristics are particularly valuable during long desert races where durability and manageable power delivery can matter as much as peak horsepower.

Purpose-Built Desert Race Chassis
The RZR Pro R Factory was much more than a production Pro R fitted with a roll cage and safety equipment. Polaris developed a high-strength, lightweight chassis intended to satisfy the requirements of major desert and rally-raid organizations.
Protection included a full skid plate, integrated race cage and front and rear Baja bumpers. Dedicated mounts carried spare tires, tools and a jack so the crew could make repairs away from the pits.
The vehicle ran 35-inch BFGoodrich tires mounted on Method Race Wheels using Bead Grip technology. The larger tire package provided additional ground clearance, impact protection and flotation across rocks, sand and high-speed desert terrain.
FOX Live Valve Shocks and DYNAMIX DV
Polaris equipped the Pro R Factory with FOX 3.0 Live Valve X2 internal-bypass shocks controlled by a race-tuned version of DYNAMIX DV. The system could independently adjust compression and rebound damping at each corner based on vehicle movement and driver input.
This gave the race team a broad operating range for courses that could include deep whoops, high-speed graded roads, rocks, silt and tight corners during the same event. Rather than relying on one fixed shock setting, the semi-active system continuously responded to changing conditions.
Suspension development remained a major part of the racing program in subsequent seasons. Polaris Factory Racing later tested additional chassis technology, including the SDi active sway-bar links used in Baja competition. That development eventually helped connect factory racing experience with technology offered on the 2026 RZR Pro R Ultra Edition.
Race Cockpit, Navigation and Communications
Long-distance desert racing requires more than speed. Drivers and navigators may spend hours inside the vehicle while monitoring engine data, following the course and communicating with the pits.
The Pro R Factory cockpit included Sparco seats, harnesses and a steering wheel, along with a seven-inch RIDE COMMAND display and GPS navigation. PCI communications equipment connected the crew with its support team, while RIGID lighting provided forward visibility and helped other competitors identify the vehicle during nighttime racing.
Original Polaris Factory Racing Drivers
Polaris selected three drivers for the program’s inaugural 2023 season:
- Austin Weiland
- Brock Heger
- Cayden MacCachren
The team debuted at the 2023 SCORE San Felipe 250 before contesting the Baja 500, Vegas to Reno, Baja 400 and Baja 1000. These races gave Polaris an opportunity to develop the vehicle across short, rough desert events and longer endurance competitions.
How the RZR Pro R Factory Evolved
The vehicle introduced in 2023 was only the beginning. Polaris subsequently developed a second-generation Pro R Factory with extensive updates based on lessons from its first season of competition.
The program also expanded beyond vehicles reserved for factory drivers. Polaris eventually offered a customer version of the RZR Pro R Factory, giving private professional teams access to an OEM-developed turnkey race UTV with 225- and 255-horsepower engine options.

A Turning Point for Polaris RZR Racing
The 2023 RZR Pro R Factory was significant because it formalized Polaris’ transition from manufacturer-supported UTV racing to a fully integrated factory program. The company was no longer simply providing production vehicles and parts to outside racers. Polaris was designing the race vehicle, operating the team and using competition to accelerate development.
That investment produced results well beyond the inaugural season. RZR Factory Racing later won major events across Baja, Dakar, King of the Hammers, the Mint 400 and Vegas to Reno. The team’s undefeated 2025 racing season demonstrated how far the program had progressed from the original 2023 launch.
The first-generation Pro R Factory therefore occupies an important place in RZR history: it was the vehicle that established Polaris’ modern factory racing program and created the foundation for the race machines that followed.
