Dune Review: Can-Am Maverick R

Can-Am Maverick R

By Jon Crowley

We picked up our new Can-Am Maverick R from MotoExpo Concord on Monday and after breaking it in on the Rubicon Trail we brought it out to Sand Mountain Nevada to see how it would do in the dunes.

Likes:

  • Great power – even with stock 32-inch tires
  • Engine/Exhaust/Transmission noise is very tolerable
  • Stance (track width and wheelbase) is great for sand dunes
  • Excellent ground clearance
  • Handled small to medium whoops well.
  • Car feels very solid
  • Sport+ Engine Mode is very quick

Dislikes:

  • Smart Shox shocks bottomed out on transitions even in Sport+ mode
  • No “oh shit!” button to stiffen shocks manually
  • Automatic mode for Dual-Clutch Transmission seems to “hunt” for right gear
  • Navigation requires you to tether cell phone
  • While front visibility is better than X3, it is still not fantastic
  • No Launch Mode
  • Bar graph for coolant temp instead of actual number
  • No Transmission Temperature Gauge
  • Brakes don’t feel as good as expected
