When Yamaha introduced the Rhino as a 2004 model, it did more than launch a new kind of side-by-side. It inspired a community, launched businesses, and forever changed the way people experienced off-road recreation.
Before the Rhino: An Industry Waiting to Happen
Today, side-by-sides are everywhere.
Every major manufacturer offers models built for work, recreation, rock crawling, desert riding, hunting, farming, and family adventures. Across North America, thousands of enthusiasts spend their weekends exploring trails, climbing rocks, crossing deserts, and riding dunes in machines that simply did not exist a generation ago.
Before 2004, however, the market looked very different.
If you wanted a side-by-side, your choices included machines such as the Kawasaki MULE, Polaris RANGER, and John Deere Gator. They were dependable utility vehicles designed for farms, ranches, construction sites, and other work environments—not primarily for weekend recreation.
At Glamis, enthusiasts found their own solution.
Modified golf carts.
Throughout the late 1990s and early 2000s, customized golf carts became a fixture around the Imperial Sand Dunes. Owners installed lift kits, larger tires, polished wheels, stereos, lights, custom upholstery, and elaborate paint schemes.
They cruised from camp to camp, visited the vendor area, and traveled Sand Highway to destinations such as Oldsmobile Hill and Comp Hill.
The movement became so popular that it even supported its own publication, Cart Wheelin’ Magazine, which showcased custom builds, new accessories, and the culture growing around modified golf carts.
But when it came time for a real dune ride, the golf cart stayed behind.
Golf carts were heavy, lacked four-wheel drive, offered little suspension travel, and were not designed to tackle the large bowls, steep faces, and soft sand found deep in the dunes.
Many enthusiasts owned one vehicle for camp and another for the dunes.
That was simply the way things were.
Ironically, one of the companies that would later become closely associated with custom Yamaha Rhinos began by building those very golf carts.
Doug Tyler of TMW Offroad remembers exactly what he thought when Yamaha introduced the Rhino.
“We were so excited when we first saw the Yamaha Rhino because we had built golf carts, but they couldn’t make it up most dunes and had no 4×4.”
Once Tyler drove one, its potential became obvious.
“We were super impressed with the 4×4, the power, and the suspension.”
For the first time, one machine could comfortably cruise around camp, carry two people, and then head directly into the dunes.
Today, that concept seems obvious.
In 2003, it was revolutionary.
Yamaha’s Vision for the Rhino
Yamaha knew the Rhino was different.
When the company introduced the Rhino 660 as a 2004 model, it did not present it as simply another utility vehicle. Yamaha’s original media materials described it as “the ultimate side-by-side vehicle” and declared that the company had created a new category of off-road machine.
Powered by the proven 660cc engine used in the Yamaha Grizzly ATV, the Rhino combined fully independent suspension, selectable four-wheel drive with differential lock, automotive-style controls, seating for two, and a tilting cargo bed.
It retained the practical features expected from a utility vehicle but added the power, ground clearance, suspension, and drivetrain needed for serious off-road recreation.
Yamaha envisioned owners using the Rhino around ranches, hunting properties, trail systems, and recreational areas—places where utility and adventure naturally overlapped.
Today, those ideas seem familiar.
In 2003, they were anything but.
This was also an era before downloadable press kits and online media centers. New model introductions were accompanied by printed media kits—the same type of materials handed to journalists at launch events and used to introduce new vehicles to the powersports press.
Those original materials have become surprisingly difficult to find. After reaching out to several magazines and Yamaha, my friends at Dirt Wheels Magazine were the only ones able to locate the original hard-copy materials after more than two decades.
Inside the original Yamaha Rhino 660 media kit are the factory photography, feature sheets, specifications, pricing, and background information used to introduce the machine to journalists.
Reading those materials today makes one point clear: Yamaha understood it had created a breakthrough vehicle.
What even Yamaha could not fully predict was how far enthusiasts and the aftermarket would take it.
Yamaha created a new category of off-road vehicle. Owners and the aftermarket transformed it into an industry.
Glamis: Where the Rhino Found a New Identity
If Yamaha introduced the Rhino, Glamis transformed it.
Owners quickly realized that the Rhino could do something no previous side-by-side had managed.
It could replace two vehicles.
No longer did a family necessarily need a golf cart for getting around camp and an ATV or sand rail for recreation. The Rhino comfortably carried two people around camp, then climbed dunes that golf carts could only dream of.
It also invited more people into off-road recreation. Spouses, children, and friends who might not have been comfortable riding an ATV suddenly had a machine they could enjoy together.
Bill Schueler of Jagged X remembers how different the Rhino felt compared with everything that had come before it.
“The Yamaha Rhino was like nothing the off-road community had ever seen. A nimble, sporty, and quite capable off-road vehicle with a relatively affordable price point.”
Schueler also recognized the opportunity that Yamaha’s new platform created.
“The Rhino created a brand-new opportunity for the aftermarket to tackle.”
Owners immediately began asking questions Yamaha had not intended to answer.
How much farther could the suspension travel?
Could it climb bigger dunes?
Could it carry four people?
Could it be faster?
Could it have a stereo?
Could it become something uniquely their own?
The Rhino was no longer simply being used.
It was being personalized.
Roll cages, long-travel suspension, four-seat conversions, performance upgrades, audio systems, communications equipment, custom lighting, paint, and graphics began appearing throughout Glamis.
Each holiday weekend became an informal product showcase. Owners cruised through camp looking at other builds, asking who made a cage, inspecting suspension systems, listening to stereos, and gathering ideas for their next upgrades.
The dunes were where owners drove their Rhinos.
Camp was where the Rhino evolved.
Building a Community
As Rhino ownership grew, so did the need for a place where owners could exchange ideas.
One of the first people to recognize that need was Brian Bush, founder of RhinoForums.net.
A trip to Glamis in February 2006 changed how Bush viewed the future of the Rhino. Near his camp sat a fully built SoCal Fab race Rhino.
“It was the coolest thing I’d ever seen outside of one-off race cars and trucks. A vehicle that a regular Joe could buy and modify into an off-road racing machine. It hit me right then and there that off-road was going to have an all-new segment, and I wanted to be involved.”
RhinoForums.net followed shortly afterward.
At the time, Rhino conversations were scattered across general off-road bulletin boards. Side-by-side owners were sometimes dismissed by longtime enthusiasts who had grown up fabricating sand cars, race vehicles, and four-wheel drives from the ground up.
RhinoForums.net gave the new community a place of its own.
Members documented complete builds, discussed suspension and performance modifications, reviewed products, posted installation advice, shared ride reports, and helped one another solve problems.
The bulletin board also made the Rhino community larger than any single riding area.
Bush saw accessibility as one of the Rhino’s greatest contributions.
“Previously, I wanted a sand buggy, and I wanted a desert race car. Without the skills necessary to build one from scratch, and without the budget to buy one complete, I was without both. A few short months after buying a bone-stock Rhino, I was playing in the dunes and racing a safe, long-travel Rhino with nothing but bolt-on parts.”
The platform allowed an ordinary enthusiast to buy a production vehicle and gradually transform it into something that previously would have required extensive fabrication skills and a much larger budget.
The online community soon became a real-world one.
Owners who met through RhinoForums.net organized dune trips, trail rides, and monthly gatherings. Bush remembers more than 200 customized Rhinos attending the forum’s “Friday Night Rhinos” events.
“The Rhino and RhinoForums.net helped build a new community of off-road enthusiasts.”

2008 Jagged X Crash in Glamis

One of the gatherings that came to define those early years was Rhino Crash, hosted by Jagged X in Glamis.
The first two events, held in 2006 and 2007, brought Rhino owners together for weekends of dune riding, camping, checking out new products, and comparing custom builds.
Schueler says Jagged X created the gathering because customers could not get enough of the rapidly growing market.
“With a multitude of companies creating aftermarket products, our customers could not get enough. We decided to create an event specifically for this new and evolving segment.”
By the third annual gathering in 2008, the market had begun expanding beyond the Yamaha Rhino. Polaris had introduced the RZR 800, giving enthusiasts another recreational side-by-side platform to modify.
To make the gathering more inclusive, Jagged X dropped “Rhino” from the event name and renamed it Jagged X Crash.
The name change reflected how quickly the market had evolved. What began as a gathering centered around one Yamaha had become an event for an entire category of side-by-sides.
Schueler remembers recognizing that the movement was no temporary trend.
“With other manufacturers jumping into the market, we could tell this was no fad but a legitimate market segment that was going to continue to expand and evolve.”
The third annual Jagged X Crash in 2008 captured that transition as Rhino owners, RZR owners, builders, vendors, and families gathered in the place where the modern side-by-side movement had first taken root.
The Rhino Finds the Starting Line
Although Yamaha did not design the Rhino as a race vehicle, owners wasted little time testing its limits.
In 2005, Cory Sappington entered a Yamaha Rhino in the Best in the Desert Vegas to Reno, marking what is believed to be the Rhino’s first appearance in a major desert race.

That first effort did not remain an isolated experiment for long.
Less than six months later, five Yamaha Rhinos lined up for the 2006 Best in the Desert Parker 250.

The Parker lineup also showed how rapidly builders were experimenting with the platform. Each Rhino used a different combination of cages, suspension, bodywork, safety equipment, and performance upgrades. Even in its earliest racing appearances, no two Rhinos were exactly alike. Builders were already experimenting with different suspension designs, safety equipment, chassis layouts, and fabrication techniques—an early indication of how quickly the aftermarket was innovating.
These early racers were not purpose-built sport side-by-sides. They were heavily modified versions of the same recreational utility vehicle Yamaha had introduced only a few years earlier.
Racing would later become more closely associated with purpose-built machines that followed the Rhino, but these first desert efforts remain important because they demonstrated how quickly owners were pushing Yamaha’s platform into entirely new territory.
The Aftermarket Awakens
The Rhino did not become an aftermarket icon overnight.
It evolved one upgrade at a time.
Owners were not necessarily trying to build show vehicles or race machines. They wanted to make their Rhinos better suited to the way they rode.
Each successful improvement solved one problem, inspired another idea, and created opportunities for entrepreneurs willing to build the next product.
Within a few short years, the Rhino had become the foundation of an entirely new aftermarket.
Building a Better Rhino
For many owners, the first major modification was a roll cage.
Protection was part of the appeal, but appearance was just as important.
The factory cage reflected the Rhino’s utility roots. Aftermarket builders created sleeker, lower-profile designs that changed the vehicle’s personality and gave owners a way to stand out around camp.
Each fabricator developed a recognizable style. A custom cage could make a Rhino look lower, wider, and far more aggressive before anyone noticed the suspension underneath.
Once the cage changed, other upgrades followed.
Aluminum roofs, quarter doors, harnesses, bumpers, skid plates, improved seats, lighting, and storage systems completed the transformation.
One of the companies helping drive that movement was SDR Motorsports.
Tim Berendes says the company owes its existence to the demand for customized Rhinos.
“SDR was literally created because of the crazy demand for custom-built Rhinos. We had some ideas of how to do things differently and put some style in those early builds.”
SDR’s first product was a two-seat aluminum roof for the stock cage.
The company did not have a bead roller or an established manufacturing process. Berendes and his team simply figured out how to make the product, posted it on GlamisDunes.com, and watched the response grow.
When owners began breaking the factory plastic seat bases, SDR designed an aluminum replacement that also lowered the seating position.
Then came custom cages and four-seat conversions.
Nearly every new product began with a customer conversation.
“People would break stuff or want something to work better. They would come into the shop and we would try to figure out how to make the car work better.”
Berendes says that direct relationship with customers shaped almost everything SDR developed.
“Almost every product and build came from conversations with customers about what they wanted and then trying to figure out the best and most unique way to do it.”
Demand grew quickly.
“In September of 2007 we built a Rhino and took it to SEMA. By Christmas of that year the shop was full of nothing but Rhinos.”
Looking back, Berendes does not hesitate when asked how important the Rhino was to SDR.
“It was pivotal. Really, 100 percent of SDR was due to the Rhino. It put us on the map and gave us so much opportunity.”

Long Travel Yamaha Rhino
The Long-Travel Revolution
Custom cages gave the Rhino a new appearance.
Long-travel suspension changed how it moved.
The factory independent suspension was advanced for a utility-oriented side-by-side, but owners were no longer treating the Rhino like a utility vehicle. They wanted to carry more speed through the dunes, smooth out whoops, and explore increasingly rough terrain.
Companies across the country responded.

At one point, UTVGuide.net documented more than three dozen companies offering long-travel suspension systems for the Yamaha Rhino.
No previous side-by-side had inspired that level of suspension development.
Among the early innovators was Long Travel Industries.
Brian Bennet says the demand became clear almost immediately after driving the Rhino in the desert.
“Pretty much right away after we took it out to the desert and drove it.”
Creating one of the first long-travel systems required far more than making longer control arms.
“First getting the correct shock motion ratio utilizing the stock pickup points, and then camber and caster without exceeding axle plunge.”
The results changed how people used the machine.
“They became more of a recreational vehicle than a utility vehicle.”
Before the Rhino, Long Travel Industries had focused on full-size off-road race vehicles. The new platform created an entirely different business opportunity.
“Before the Rhino we were building full-size race cars. I think if we hadn’t started making suspension and customizing them, they would still be utility vehicles.”
UTVGuide.net experienced that transformation firsthand.
Our first side-by-side project vehicle was a 2006 Yamaha Rhino. It quickly became a long-travel build and a platform for testing the wave of suspension systems and accessories entering the market.

By 2009, the Yamaha Rhino had become a blank canvas for builders. Custom creations like this showcased just how far the platform had evolved from Yamaha’s original vision.
By the end of the decade, custom Rhino builds had reached an astonishing level of sophistication. What began with simple cages and suspension upgrades evolved into complete ground-up builds featuring custom chassis work, engine conversions, premium suspension, elaborate paint, and handcrafted interiors. Our December 2009 UTV of the Month is a perfect example of just how far builders pushed the platform in only a few short years.
More Suspension, Then More Power
Better suspension encouraged owners to drive faster.
Naturally, they wanted more power.
Brian Bush remembers several modifications becoming nearly universal among early Rhino owners.
“The first aftermarket parts every Rhino owner wanted? CDI box paired with a carburetor re-jet kit, siphon break, and a machined clutch sheave for top speed and engine performance.”
Those relatively affordable bolt-on upgrades improved throttle response and allowed the Rhino to carry more speed without requiring a complete engine build.
More ambitious owners added exhaust systems, big-bore engines, turbochargers, and complete engine swaps.
One of Berendes’ favorite SDR projects combined a two-seat appearance with hidden family seating. Two small seats were mounted low and forward in the cargo-bed area so the Rhino could retain the lines of a two-seat build while carrying children.
The finished machine featured long-travel suspension, custom bodywork, custom paint, and a Rotax 800 engine transplanted from an ATV.
Builds such as that demonstrated how far owners and fabricators were willing to push Yamaha’s platform.
No two Rhinos stayed alike for long.
The Rhino Becomes a Lifestyle
As owners spent entire days and weekends in their Rhinos, performance was no longer the only priority.
The experience mattered too.
Trevor Kaplan of SSV Works remembers displaying one of the first custom Rhinos at the 2005 SEMA Show.
“The response was unlike any car we’d ever built. People went nuts. It was the first time a utility vehicle had the bones to be converted into something consumers could truly make their own.”
The Rhino was no longer used only for work or for traveling from one destination to another. Owners were exploring, camping, socializing, and spending complete weekends with friends and family.
Music became a natural part of that experience.
“The Rhino wasn’t just about utility. It was the first real crossover into sport. People were spending time in it exploring, camping, and hanging out. Music has always enhanced those experiences. It becomes the soundtrack to your adventure.”
Designing audio products for a side-by-side required an entirely new approach.
Dust, mud, vibration, and water quickly exposed the weaknesses of conventional automotive audio components. Traditional DIN head units were not designed for that environment.
SSV Works developed components, wiring, enclosures, and source units specifically for off-road use.
“There was no playbook. What worked in cars and boats didn’t apply to the dust, mud, water, and vibration of off-road.”
Kaplan describes the Rhino as foundational to the company.
“The Rhino gave us the opportunity to define an entirely new product category and helped establish SSV Works as the leader in UTV audio.”
Staying Connected
Communication evolved just as quickly.
Greg Cottrell of Rugged Radios was already established in off-road racing and the Glamis buggy scene when the Rhino appeared.
The machine initially became popular as a Glamis pit vehicle. As owners began venturing farther into the dunes, Cottrell developed an intercom and radio package that bolted directly to the stock cage.
Installation took about 20 minutes.
“It went crazy!”
The Rhino itself helped create the demand.
The engine was positioned between the seats, the CVT kept engine speed high, and performance exhaust systems made many modified machines even louder.
A headset intercom allowed the driver and passenger to communicate clearly while a two-way radio kept multiple vehicles connected during group rides.
“The Rugged VOX intercom with headsets now had the opportunity to shine. Block out the noise, save your hearing, talk to your passenger effortlessly, and stay connected when riding with your friends. Did I mention listen to music? It became the perfect package.”
The Rhino had changed group riding. Families and friends were traveling farther from camp and spending more time exploring together.
Audio and communications did not create that lifestyle.
They made it better.

The Sand Sports Super Show: The Industry’s Showcase
As the Rhino aftermarket grew, so did one of its most important annual gathering points.
The Sand Sports Super Show in Costa Mesa, California, had long been known for sand rails, dune buggies, ATVs, and the companies serving the sand-sports market.
By the mid-2000s, it had also become the place where Rhino builders unveiled their newest ideas.
Every September, fabricators and manufacturers displayed new suspension systems, cages, doors, roofs, wheels, tires, lighting, audio systems, communications equipment, and complete custom builds.
For enthusiasts, it was an opportunity to see in one weekend what had previously been scattered across Glamis camps and online build threads.
One of the earliest custom Yamaha Rhinos displayed at the Sand Sports Super Show. Long Travel Industries showcased this build in the Unleashed Apparel booth during the 2005 event, offering an early glimpse of the aftermarket movement that would soon transform the industry.
The 2006 TMW Limo Rhino
One of the most memorable early builds appeared in 2006 when TMW Offroad brought its stretched Limo Rhino to the Sand Sports Super Show.
The chassis had been extended so four adults could fit comfortably.
Factory-built four-seat recreational side-by-sides were still years away from becoming common, yet the aftermarket was already responding to families who wanted to bring more people along.
The Limo Rhino demonstrated what made the early era so creative.
The aftermarket was not waiting for manufacturers to decide what came next.
It was building the future itself.
By 2008, side-by-sides had become one of the biggest attractions at the Sand Sports Super Show. Custom UTVs filled booths that only a few years earlier had been devoted primarily to sand cars, ATVs, and related products.
The show evolved alongside the market.
More than two decades later, UTVs remain central to the Sand Sports Super Show. The event’s growth offers another example of how the category that began with the Rhino reshaped businesses far beyond companies building vehicle parts.
Beyond the Dunes
By 2007, the Rhino had transformed riding at Glamis.
It had become a capable dune machine, an all-around camp vehicle, and the platform of choice for a rapidly growing aftermarket.
One question remained.

Could it rock crawl?
The answer came that spring at the inaugural UTV Rally in Moab.
Enthusiasts from across the country gathered to explore some of America’s most iconic four-wheel-drive trails. For many participants, it was the first time they had seen Rhinos climbing slickrock ledges, navigating narrow canyons, and tackling terrain traditionally reserved for Jeeps.
Among them was UTVGuide.net’s own 2006 Yamaha Rhino—our first dedicated side-by-side project vehicle.
The event changed our perception of what the Rhino could do.
Until then, we viewed it primarily as a dune and desert machine.
Moab proved it was far more versatile.

Later that same year, the same Rhino traveled to Northern California for a run on the Rubicon Trail.
Long regarded as one of North America’s premier rock-crawling destinations, the Rubicon had traditionally been the domain of modified Jeeps and purpose-built four-wheel drives.
The lightweight Rhino demonstrated that it could navigate many of the same legendary obstacles.
Those trips expanded more than where people rode.
They expanded what people believed a side-by-side could be.
The Competition Arrives
For nearly four years, Yamaha had the recreational sport side-by-side market largely to itself.
The Rhino proved there was demand for a machine that blended utility, recreation, capability, and customization.
Other manufacturers took notice.
In 2007, Polaris introduced the RZR 800.
The RZR would eventually push the high-performance side of the market in a new direction, but its arrival also validated the category Yamaha had established.
Yamaha had not simply built a successful vehicle.
It had created a market competitors wanted to enter.
For the aftermarket, the arrival of the RZR was not a disruption.
It was another opportunity.
The companies that had spent the previous several years designing Rhino cages, suspension systems, roofs, doors, seats, audio equipment, communications systems, and performance products quickly applied that experience to the new Polaris platform.
Within months, many builders whose names had become associated with the Yamaha Rhino were unveiling RZR products at events such as the Sand Sports Super Show.
Businesses born during the Rhino era now had a larger market to serve.
The vehicle changed, but the skills, supplier relationships, customer base, and culture developed around the Rhino carried forward.
The Rhino had established the ecosystem.
The arrival of the RZR allowed it to expand.

The Rhino Evolves
Yamaha continued developing the Rhino as competition entered the market.
For 2009, the company introduced the Yamaha Rhino 700 with electronic fuel injection.
The updated engine delivered smoother throttle response, easier starting, and greater refinement while preserving the layout and versatility that had made the original Rhino successful.
By then, however, the story had grown far beyond a single Yamaha model.
The community, companies, products, events, and expectations created during the Rhino’s first years had become part of the wider side-by-side industry.

A Legacy Built by Owners
One theme appeared repeatedly while researching this history.
The Rhino did not simply create customers.
It created entrepreneurs.
Tim Berendes said SDR Motorsports was created because of the demand for custom Rhinos.
Brian Bennet explained that Long Travel Industries entered an entirely new business because owners wanted more suspension travel.
Trevor Kaplan described the Rhino as foundational to SSV Works and the development of purpose-built UTV audio.
Greg Cottrell watched Rugged Radios grow alongside groups of Rhino owners who wanted to communicate with passengers and other vehicles.
Doug Tyler saw TMW Offroad evolve from customized golf carts into one of the early leaders of the UTV aftermarket.
