For the seventh round of the Rocky Mountain ATV/MC 2024 Season, we head to Mesquite, Nevada, for a battle in the sand. With the UNLTD series racing on Saturday, Pro Production and Pro Stock moved to Sunday for back-to-back racing to finish the day. Consistency is critical for a race track like this, especially with the variable of the heatwave that was in store for race day. Pro Stock was first off the line, and Paxton Schendel put his Polaris Rs1 on top for the first time this season and his first time in the Pro ranks.
Sandberg had a minor issue during the first lap, putting him quite behind on the opening lap. Still, it didn’t deter him as he countered with the fastest lap of the race and the only driver in the class to break into the sub-10-minute lap times at 9:54. Once out of the moto section, Marquez and Schendel battled heavily as Schendel finally made a pass and got it to stick during the second lap and gaining the fresh air being in the lead.
From start to finish, Schendel led quite the consistent pace, with each lap within less than 30 seconds apart, as he finished with a massive lead over the rest of the field at just over 5 minutes. In 2nd place, Sandberg put on quite the charge after the first lap issues, catching up to Marquez during the third lap and making a pass stick during his 4th with just one lap to go. Marquez suffered a mechanical problem with his transmission, forcing him to back his car down as he finished the race but in last place after a promising start.
In Pro Production, the father-son duo of Beau and Braden Judge started on the front line in their Can-Am Maverick X3’s, and Beau Baron and Karsen Sandberg were on the front line as well. Behind them, Shawn Saxton, Paxton Schendel, Mark Higham, and Larry Heidler filled out the back row as they went into the first lap wheel-to-wheel, and the battles were on. Braden sat directly behind his dad, just seconds behind him lap after lap, with only 3 seconds separating them at the finish line. Baron pushed his Polaris RZR Pro R, keeping the duo in sight, finishing just under two minutes behind them and in third physically. From the second line, Saxton was putting on a charge and started two minutes behind, trying to shave time off to pass them on corrected time. He dealt with a few minor mechanical issues, which made it hard for him to push ahead of the Judge duo. He finished 15 seconds behind Beau and 11 seconds behind Braden after corrected time to finish in 3rd for the second straight race!
Rocky Mountain ATV/MC WORCS wants to thank all of the volunteers, racers, and track crew for another awesome weekend of racing in Mesquite. We hope to see everyone at the final round on October 25th-27th in Lake Havasu City.
