Why Grass Clippings Are Compost Gold

Fresh grass clippings are one of the easiest and most valuable ingredients you can add to a compost pile.

Because they’re rich in nitrogen and naturally contain moisture, grass clippings begin breaking down almost immediately. They also help generate the heat that accelerates decomposition throughout the pile.

After mowing our one-acre lawn, we collect the grass clippings and load them into the cargo bed of our Can-Am Defender HD11. Rather than making repeated trips back and forth to the compost pile with the mower, we simply position the Defender near the area we’re mowing and empty each collection into the bed as we go. Once the bed is full, it’s a single trip to the compost pile where the hydraulic dump bed makes unloading quick and effortless.

Fresh manure should generally be composted before being used around vegetables. The composting process helps reduce weed seeds and potential pathogens while creating a much more stable soil amendment.

Oak leaves are an outstanding source of carbon and pair perfectly with nitrogen-rich materials like grass clippings and manure.

We collect and stockpile leaves each fall so we always have plenty of carbon material available throughout the year. As fresh grass clippings and horse manure are added, the stored leaves help maintain the proper balance in the pile.

Leaves decompose faster if they’re shredded first, but whole leaves will eventually break down as well.

Managing an Active Compost Pile

Building a compost pile is only the first step. A little maintenance helps speed decomposition and produces a better finished product.

Turn the Pile Regularly

The microorganisms responsible for composting need oxygen to thrive.

Turning the pile every few weeks introduces fresh air, redistributes moisture, and moves material from the cooler outer edges into the hot center where decomposition happens fastest.

On our property, we use a tractor with a front-end loader to turn the compost pile. It quickly mixes several cubic yards of material while making sure everything continues breaking down evenly.

Keep the Moisture Just Right

A compost pile should stay about as moist as a wrung-out sponge.

If it becomes too dry, decomposition slows dramatically. Too much water can eliminate oxygen and create unpleasant odors.

To help maintain consistent moisture, we keep our compost pile covered. The cover helps retain moisture during the hot summer months while also preventing heavy rains from soaking the pile.

Monitor the Temperature

One of the best tools you can own for composting is a long-stem compost thermometer.

As bacteria break down organic matter, they naturally generate heat. A healthy compost pile will often reach temperatures between 130°F and 150°F, which is considered the ideal range for rapid decomposition. Those temperatures also help destroy many weed seeds and plant pathogens.

We regularly check the thermometer to see how the pile is progressing. If temperatures begin dropping too early, it’s usually a sign the pile needs another turning, a little more moisture, or an additional dose of nitrogen-rich material like fresh grass clippings.

Watching the thermometer climb after adding a fresh load of grass or turning the pile is a good indication that the microorganisms are doing exactly what they’re supposed to do.

When Is Compost Ready?

Depending on temperature, moisture, and how often it’s turned, finished compost typically takes anywhere from three months to a year.

When it’s ready, the material becomes dark brown, crumbly, and has a pleasant earthy smell. Individual leaves, grass clippings, and manure are no longer recognizable.

Putting Finished Compost to Work

Finished compost becomes one of the most valuable resources on the property.

We use it throughout our garden to improve the soil before planting vegetables, around fruit trees, in flower beds, and whenever new plants go into the ground. It’s also excellent for amending planting holes when installing trees and shrubs or rejuvenating tired soil that has been producing for years.

Regular applications improve soil structure, increase water retention, encourage beneficial microorganisms, and slowly release nutrients throughout the growing season.

The result is healthier vegetables, more productive fruit trees, vibrant flowers, and soil that continues getting better every year.
