Why a UTV and Tow-Behind Rough-Cut Mower May Be Better Than a Tractor for Some Properties

Not Every Property Needs a Tractor

When it comes to maintaining acreage, many people automatically assume a compact tractor is the only serious option for mowing fields and managing overgrown areas. Tractors have earned that reputation for good reason—they’re incredibly capable machines and remain the right choice for many agricultural tasks.

But they’re not always the best choice.

For many rural property owners, a utility UTV paired with a tow-behind rough-cut mower can be more maneuverable, more comfortable, and more versatile while still handling the mowing chores that need to get done. If your property includes trees, orchards, fence lines, pond banks, rolling terrain, or seasonal muddy areas, a UTV may actually be the better tool for the job.

We’ve been putting a Can-Am Defender HD11 Limited and 57-inch Kunz Engineering Rough-Cut Mower to work around our property, and the combination has changed the way we think about field maintenance. While it won’t replace a tractor for every task, it has proven to be an exceptionally capable setup for the kinds of jobs many acreage owners tackle every week.

Test Setup

Our evaluation was based on real-world property maintenance rather than a controlled test course.

Vehicle: Can-Am Defender HD11 Limited
Mower: Kunz Engineering 57-inch Rough-Cut Mower
Property: Mixed pasture, oak woodland, garden areas, seasonal muddy sections, hillsides, pond banks, and native grasses

The goal wasn’t to mow a perfectly manicured lawn. It was to see how this combination performed tackling the kind of work many rural property owners face throughout the year.

Two Different Approaches to the Same Job

Although both setups are designed to mow heavy grass and weeds, they accomplish the task in very different ways.

A tractor-mounted flail mower attaches to the three-point hitch and is powered directly by the tractor’s PTO. The mower becomes part of the tractor itself, making it an excellent solution for commercial mowing, larger properties, and operators who already rely on a tractor for numerous implements.

A tow-behind rough-cut mower carries its own engine. Instead of supplying power to the blades, the tow vehicle simply provides traction and maintains a consistent ground speed while the mower does the cutting.

That seemingly small difference changes the entire mowing experience.

Why the Defender HD11 Works So Well

The Can-Am Defender HD11 Limited is particularly well suited for towing a rough-cut mower.

Its 999cc Rotax inline three-cylinder engine produces smooth, predictable power with excellent low-end torque. That’s exactly what you want when mowing, where maintaining a slow, consistent pace is far more important than rapid acceleration.

The Can-Am Defender HD11 features three selectable Engine/Drive Modes that alter throttle response and power delivery for different tasks.

  • Work Mode: Delivers smoother, slower throttle response, which is ideal for precise low-speed maneuvering, heavy towing, or working around the yard.
  • Normal Mode: Provides a balanced, standard throttle response suited for everyday trail riding and general use.
  • Sport Mode: Offers the most aggressive and immediate throttle response for quick acceleration and more spirited driving.

Because the Kunz mower powers its own blades, the Defender isn’t using engine power to spin a PTO shaft. Instead, the engine focuses on what it does best—providing steady pulling power while maintaining a controlled ground speed. Whether climbing gentle grades or working through thick vegetation, the Defender feels composed and confident.

The result is a relaxed mowing experience that never feels like you’re asking the vehicle to do something outside its comfort zone.

Turf Mode helps the Defender Turn Sharp

Tight Turning Makes a Difference

One area where the Defender consistently shines is maneuverability.

Our property includes numerous trees, fencing, garden beds, buildings, and landscaped areas that require frequent turning and careful navigation.

The Defender’s relatively short wheelbase and responsive steering make it easy to weave around obstacles without the wide sweeping turns often required by tractors.

Even more helpful is Can-Am’s Turf Mode.

In Turf Mode, the Defender operates in 2WD with the rear differential unlocked, allowing the inside and outside rear wheels to rotate at different speeds while turning. That reduces tire scrub, makes steering lighter, and allows significantly tighter turns without damaging the grass.

Anyone who has tried turning a locked rear axle across a lawn immediately appreciates the difference.

Can-Am Defender HD11 Limited has an enclosed cab with HVAC

Comfortable Enough to Mow for Hours

Field mowing isn’t necessarily difficult work.

It can simply be long, repetitive work.

That’s where the Defender HD11 Limited separates itself from many traditional utility machines.

Our Defender features a fully enclosed factory cab complete with heat and air conditioning.

On cool spring mornings, the heater quickly takes the chill out of the cab before the day warms up.

During the middle of summer, the air conditioning becomes one of the machine’s biggest luxuries.

But perhaps the greatest benefit is something many people overlook until they’ve spent several hours mowing.

Dust.

Even when vegetation is relatively green, rough-cut mowing throws an incredible amount of dust, pollen, grass particles, and seeds into the air.

Instead of breathing everything the mower creates, the enclosed cab and HVAC system help keep dust outside while maintaining a comfortable interior.

At the end of a long mowing session, you climb out clean instead of covered in dirt.

Lighter Weight Has Its Advantages

Compact tractors offer excellent traction.

They’re also heavy.

That extra weight is an advantage when lifting heavy loads or operating ground-engaging implements, but it can become a disadvantage when fields remain damp after rain or irrigation.

The Defender weighs considerably less than many compact tractors and spreads that weight across four large tires.

Combined with selectable four-wheel drive, it can often cross muddy sections without leaving deep ruts or becoming stuck where heavier equipment may struggle.

Less weight also means less soil compaction, an added benefit around orchards, gardens, vineyards, food plots, and maintained grassy areas.

Confident on Slopes and Around Obstacles

Every property has areas that are more challenging to mow.

For us, that includes hillsides, pond banks, drainage ditches, and off-camber terrain where simply getting the mower into position can be the hardest part of the job.

One advantage of using a utility UTV is its lower center of gravity compared to many compact tractors. While every slope should be approached carefully and within the manufacturer’s operating guidelines, the Defender inspires confidence on moderate off-camber terrain where a taller tractor can sometimes feel less comfortable. The combination of four-wheel drive, a wide stance, and responsive steering makes it easier to maintain control while traversing uneven ground.

The Kunz Engineering mower adds another major advantage.

Its offset hitch allows the mower to be positioned to one side of the Defender, making it possible to cut areas that would otherwise require driving much closer to the edge. That’s especially useful when mowing pond dams, drainage ditches, fence lines, hillsides, or beneath low-hanging tree branches.

Instead of putting the tow vehicle where you don’t necessarily want it, you can keep the Defender on more stable ground while the mower reaches the vegetation.

It’s a simple feature, but one that dramatically increases both productivity and operator confidence.

Why the Kunz 57-Inch Mower Stands Out

The Kunz Engineering mower offers several advantages beyond simply eliminating the need for a PTO.

Because the mower rides on its own wheels, it naturally follows uneven terrain while articulating independently behind the Defender. That allows the tow vehicle to remain more stable over rough ground while the mower continues following the contours of the field.

One of the biggest reasons we chose the 57-inch model is its powerplant. Unlike many smaller tow-behind mowers, the 57-inch Kunz is equipped with a 27-horsepower Briggs & Stratton Commercial Grade V-Twin engine, giving it substantially more cutting power for demanding conditions. That extra horsepower allows it to power through thick, tall green grass and dense weeds without constantly bogging down or requiring multiple passes.

Kunz Engineering describes the 57-inch model as its heaviest-duty and highest-performance pull-behind mower, and after using it on our property, it’s easy to understand why. The larger engine, heavy-duty deck, and floating design make it well suited for maintaining fields rather than simply mowing lawns.

We also found the 57-inch cutting width to be an excellent match for the Defender. It’s wide enough to cover ground efficiently while remaining nimble around trees, gardens, and other obstacles. Combined with the 27 HP engine, it delivers outstanding cutting performance without feeling cumbersome in tighter areas.

Maintenance is refreshingly straightforward.

There’s no PTO shaft to grease, no driveline to connect, and no hydraulic hookups.

Simply hitch the mower, start its engine, and get to work.

For maintaining fields and overgrown areas, we wanted a mower designed for tall grass, weeds, and rough terrain rather than a finish mower. Plus we already own a UTV so a tow-behind makes sense.

The 57-inch Kunz Engineering Rough-Cut Mower checked all the right boxes:

  • 27 HP Briggs & Stratton Commercial Grade V-Twin engine.
  • Kunz Engineering’s heaviest-duty and highest-performance pull-behind mower.
  • Self-powered engine—no PTO required.
  • Offset capability for mowing pond banks, hillsides, fence lines, and other hard-to-reach areas.
  • Floating deck that follows uneven terrain.
  • Heavy-duty construction built specifically for demanding field maintenance.
  • A 57-inch cutting width that pairs exceptionally well with a utility UTV.

Where a Tractor Still Has the Edge

None of this is intended to suggest that a UTV replaces a compact tractor.

Far from it.

If your property requires moving dirt with a front loader, grading roads, digging post holes, running PTO-powered implements, lifting heavy pallets, or tackling large-scale agricultural work, a tractor remains one of the most versatile machines you can own.

Flail mowers also produce a finer finished cut and are often the preferred choice for commercial operators maintaining large acreages.

For many landowners, a tractor continues to be indispensable.

The Versatility Advantage

For our property, one of the biggest advantages of using the Defender is what happens after the mowing is finished.

Within minutes, the mower is unhooked and the Defender is back to hauling firewood, transporting compost to the garden, towing trailers, carrying fencing supplies, moving tools, or handling countless other jobs around the property.

A compact tractor may spend much of its life waiting for the next task.

A utility UTV, on the other hand, tends to stay busy year-round.

It becomes the vehicle you use almost every day, making it one of the most valuable pieces of equipment on the property.

Final Thoughts

Every property is different, and every owner has different needs.

If your primary focus is heavy agricultural work or operating a wide variety of PTO-powered implements, a compact tractor remains difficult to beat.

But if you’re maintaining horse pastures, orchards, trails, hunting property, pond banks, fields, or acreage around your home, a utility UTV paired with a quality tow-behind rough-cut mower deserves serious consideration.

Our experience with the Can-Am Defender HD11 Limited and Kunz Engineering 57-inch Rough-Cut Mower has shown that this combination offers far more capability than many people expect. It delivers excellent low-speed torque, remarkable maneuverability, outstanding comfort, and the flexibility to tackle challenging terrain while remaining comfortable enough to spend hours behind the wheel.

Beyond the enclosed HVAC-equipped cab, the Defender’s tight turning radius, Turf Mode, four-wheel-drive capability, lower center of gravity, and the offset capability of the Kunz mower create a property maintenance package that’s difficult to beat.

Most importantly, when the mowing is finished, the Defender immediately returns to hauling firewood, moving compost, towing trailers, or taking on whatever task comes next.

Sometimes the best machine isn’t the one that’s dedicated to a single job.

Sometimes it’s the one that’s ready for every job.
