The STRYKER RX1 EVO may use the engine, seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and all-wheel-drive system from a Can-Am Maverick R X rc, but calling it a modified UTV misses the point.

STRYKER Motorsport discarded the Maverick R chassis and designed an entirely new tube-frame race car around its proven powertrain. The resulting RX1 EVO is a fully enclosed, purpose-built stage rally car engineered to compete in the American Rally Association—not a recreational side-by-side converted for racing.

Its clean-sheet chassis, custom suspension and competition-focused packaging also show how far production UTV technology has progressed. A 999cc engine and transmission originally developed for the Maverick R can now serve as the foundation for a legitimate rally car.

What Is the STRYKER RX1 EVO?

The STRYKER RX1 EVO is an all-wheel-drive race car designed for stage rally competition. It combines STRYKER’s proprietary chassis and suspension with the core powertrain technology from Can-Am’s flagship sport UTV.

The production Can-Am Maverick R introduced a 240-horsepower turbocharged Rotax three-cylinder engine paired with the first seven-speed dual-clutch transmission offered in a production UTV. Drivers can leave the transmission in automatic mode or manually select gears using steering-column-mounted paddle shifters.

That combination gives STRYKER a compact, lightweight and already-developed powertrain incorporating an engine, transmission and AWD system designed to function together under demanding off-road conditions.

According to STRYKER co-founder John Annunziata, that made it an ideal starting point:

“The Maverick R powertrain gave us a proven foundation. Its 240-horsepower turbocharged engine, seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, and AWD system gave us an excellent starting point.”

Instead of engineering an entire drivetrain from unrelated automotive components, STRYKER could concentrate its development efforts on the chassis, suspension, cooling, packaging and vehicle dynamics needed for rally competition.

An All-New STRYKER Tube Chassis

Although the RX1 EVO begins with Maverick R powertrain components, none of the factory Can-Am chassis is retained.

STRYKER designed and built an entirely new tube chassis specifically for motorsports. Starting from a clean sheet gave the engineering team control over suspension geometry, rigidity, weight distribution, occupant protection, component placement and service access.

“The STRYKER is built around an all-new tube chassis designed and built by STRYKER. None of the factory chassis is retained. Starting with a clean-sheet design allowed us to optimize the vehicle specifically for motorsports rather than adapting a recreational UTV chassis.”

This is an important distinction. The RX1 EVO is not a Maverick R with enclosed bodywork and a modified roll cage. It is a dedicated race car constructed around selected Maverick R mechanical components.

The enclosed cockpit incorporates aluminum doors, substantial side-impact protection and an integrated roll structure. The chassis is built to a USAC-homologated specification and has been approved for competition by both the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb and the American Rally Association.

Safety was the first priority, but the chassis also needed to work as a practical racing platform. Components must be accessible between stages, suspension settings need to be repeatable and damaged parts must be replaceable without requiring an extensive teardown.

One Chassis for Rally, Hillclimb and More

The proprietary chassis gives STRYKER a common platform that can be configured for multiple forms of motorsports. Annunziata says the platform can support rally, hillclimb and track configurations, along with other potential applications.

That adaptability is possible because STRYKER controls the chassis rather than being limited by the dimensions and suspension mounting points of a recreational UTV frame.

The vehicle can retain the proven Maverick R powertrain architecture while receiving suspension, aerodynamics, cooling and gearing appropriate for a particular discipline.

Custom Suspension Developed for the STRYKER Platform

STRYKER also developed a fully customized suspension package for the RX1 EVO. It does not simply transfer the factory Maverick R suspension into the new chassis.

Stage rally subjects a car to a different combination of loads than desert racing or recreational UTV driving. A rally car must remain predictable through high-speed gravel corners, absorb abrupt compressions and maintain traction across changing surfaces. It must also respond quickly when the driver transitions from acceleration to braking and then changes direction.

The clean-sheet chassis allowed STRYKER to establish suspension geometry and mounting locations specifically for those requirements. Shock Therapy contributed custom shock and suspension component development, including billet radius rods engineered for the STRYKER platform.

Suspension development is complemented by revised weight distribution and packaging intended to give the driver greater control on narrow roads and technical rally stages.

Stock Maverick R Engine and DCT for Rally Reliability

The RX1 EVO rally car currently competes with an essentially stock Maverick R engine and seven-speed DCT. Although STRYKER initially referenced output around 250 horsepower in promotional material, Annunziata clarified that the present rally program prioritizes the dependability of the production powertrain rather than extensive engine modification.

That decision reflects the demands of stage rally. A rally car must survive repeated competitive stages, transits on public roads and limited service opportunities. Consistency can be more valuable than extracting maximum horsepower from the engine.

“Rally rewards reliability and consistency, so the engine and seven-speed DCT remain essentially stock. Instead, we’ve focused our engineering on the chassis, suspension, cooling, weight distribution, and overall vehicle dynamics.”

This strategy also contributes to STRYKER’s goal of controlling operating costs. The 240-horsepower Rotax engine already delivers substantial performance from less than 1,000cc, while the DCT provides rapid shifts without requiring an expensive purpose-built sequential rally transmission.

Planned RX1 EVO Rally Upgrades

The stock powertrain does not mean development has stopped. STRYKER plans to offer several competition-oriented upgrades as the platform evolves:

  • Bespoke MoTeC engine management
  • Revised transmission ratios for increased top speed
  • Limited-slip differential
  • Hydraulic handbrake

Revised gear ratios would address one of the key differences between a production UTV and a rally car. The Maverick R transmission was designed to cover recreational and off-road driving conditions, while stage rally may require more speed at the top of the transmission’s range.

A limited-slip differential and hydraulic handbrake would give drivers more control through tight hairpins and technical sections. Those changes should make the RX1 EVO behave more like a conventional rally car without abandoning the compact Maverick R powertrain that made the project possible.

STRYKER says each enhancement will be validated in competition before it is released to customers.

RX1 EVO Rally Car vs. STRYKER Pikes Peak Car

The RX1 EVO rally car should not be confused with STRYKER’s far more powerful Pikes Peak machine. Although both draw technology from the Maverick R, they were developed around very different objectives.

The rally car retains an essentially stock 240-horsepower engine and DCT because reliability, predictable power delivery and manageable operating costs are central to the program.

STRYKER’s Pikes Peak car was created to be the fastest sub-1,000cc hillclimb car possible. For that project, STRYKER partnered with Evolution Powersports to extensively modify the Rotax engine.

The hillclimb package includes upgraded internal engine components, a high-performance turbocharger system, bespoke MoTeC engine management and supporting fuel and cooling upgrades designed for sustained operation under extreme load at altitude. It currently produces approximately 450 horsepower—nearly twice the output of the production Maverick R.

The seven-speed DCT is also calibrated to complement the additional power and the unusual demands of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb.

The comparison illustrates the flexibility of the underlying concept. The same basic Rotax engine and DCT architecture can support a stock-powertrain rally car or an extreme 450-horsepower hillclimb program.

Three RX1 EVO Rally Cars Enter Competition

Rather than debuting the RX1 EVO as a single demonstration vehicle, STRYKER is putting three cars into American Rally Association competition at Rally Colorado.

The announced drivers and teams are:

  • No. 223: Cole Powelson — Drive STRYKER
  • No. 430: Lucy Block — Block Family Racing
  • No. 725: Dave Carapetyan — Rally Ready

Running three cars gives STRYKER the opportunity to collect feedback from different drivers and teams under the same event conditions. That should help identify areas where the suspension, cooling, chassis setup or powertrain calibration can be improved.

It also moves the RX1 EVO beyond concept-car status. Competition will reveal how effectively the new chassis and production-based powertrain work together across real stages, service intervals and changing terrain.

That perspective helps explain the RX1 EVO’s combination of specialized engineering and production-derived components. A completely bespoke engine, transmission and AWD system could make the car considerably more expensive to build, operate and repair. The Maverick R powertrain provides proven performance while allowing STRYKER to focus resources on the areas that define the car’s rally performance.

Why the STRYKER RX1 EVO Matters to the UTV Industry

For years, UTV manufacturers and aftermarket companies borrowed ideas and components from the automotive racing world. The STRYKER RX1 EVO reverses that relationship.

Its engine, DCT and AWD system originated in a production side-by-side, yet they are now being used as the mechanical foundation of a clean-sheet rally car. That transition demonstrates that modern UTV powertrains have advanced well beyond the belt-driven utility vehicles that originally defined the category.

Our first drive of the Can-Am Maverick R showed how dramatically the seven-speed DCT changed acceleration, power delivery and driver control in a production UTV. STRYKER is now applying those same advantages to a vehicle designed for an entirely different form of motorsports.

The RX1 EVO’s value will ultimately be established through competition. Reliability, stage times, serviceability and operating costs will determine whether the platform succeeds with rally teams.

Regardless of the results from its first events, the engineering direction is already significant. STRYKER did not merely turn a Maverick R into a rally car. It designed a new rally car around the best parts of the Maverick R—and that may be the clearest evidence yet of how influential Can-Am’s 240-horsepower UTV platform has become.
