GMR5 - 5W GMRS Handheld Radio

Reliable communication can make all the difference when you’re exploring remote trails, racing through the desert, overlanding off the grid, or coordinating with a group ride. Rugged Radios has expanded its handheld radio lineup with the introduction of the all-new GMR5-X, a feature-packed GMRS radio designed for serious off-road enthusiasts who demand durability, performance, and extended runtime.

Built for harsh environments, the GMR5-X delivers a full 5 watts of GMRS transmit power, providing stronger communication and greater range potential when traveling beyond cellular coverage. Compatible with both GMRS and FRS radios, the GMR5-X makes it easy to stay connected with friends, family, support crews, and fellow riders on the trail.

One of the biggest upgrades is the radio’s rugged IP67-rated waterproof and dustproof construction. Whether you’re dealing with mud, rain, river crossings, dust storms, or snow, the GMR5-X is engineered to keep operating when conditions become challenging. Rugged Radios also equipped the new handheld with a massive 3600mAh USB-C rechargeable battery—nearly double the capacity of the standard GMR5—allowing for significantly extended runtime during long days on the trail or multi-day adventures.

The GMR5-X also introduces Bluetooth connectivity, allowing users to pair compatible Rugged Radios accessories including the BT2, RW-H52, and RW-H32. This added flexibility makes communication easier and more convenient whether you’re driving a UTV, navigating from the passenger seat, or working around camp.

Beyond its core communication capabilities, the GMR5-X is loaded with features designed for adventure. The radio includes 22 GMRS channels, 8 GMRS repeater channels for expanded coverage, NOAA weather channels, weather alerts, noise cancellation, VOX hands-free operation, dual-channel monitoring with A/B channel switching, and a built-in FM radio. Users can also monitor VHF and UHF frequencies in listen-only mode, adding another layer of situational awareness while off-road or in remote areas.

The removable antenna allows users to upgrade for improved performance, while the Rugged 2-pin accessory port provides compatibility with Rugged Radios’ extensive lineup of headsets, microphones, and communication accessories. A backlit display ensures easy viewing in bright sunlight or nighttime conditions, and the included swivel belt clip keeps the radio secure and accessible.

Whether you’re exploring remote backcountry trails, overlanding across multiple states, or simply keeping your riding group connected, the new GMR5-X is built to deliver dependable communication when it matters most.

Proven on the Trails of Moab

Before the GMR5 Series officially launched, Rugged Radios put the radios to work in one of the most demanding off-road environments in the country. The GMR5 Series served as the official handheld radio for the Red Rock 4-Wheelers during Easter Jeep Safari in Moab, Utah.

Used by trail leaders, volunteers, and event staff throughout the week-long event, the radios helped coordinate communications across hundreds of miles of trails. The real-world deployment gave Rugged Radios an opportunity to validate the performance and durability of the new handhelds before bringing them to market.

For off-road enthusiasts, that type of field testing is significant. Easter Jeep Safari draws thousands of participants and covers everything from technical rock-crawling trails to remote backcountry routes where reliable communication is essential.

Race-Proven Heritage

One of the most interesting aspects of the GMR5 Series is its connection to Rugged Radios’ commercial and racing communication products. According to Rugged Radios, both the GMR5 and GMR5-X are built on the same platform as the company’s popular R1 business-band radio, a model that has earned a reputation for reliability in demanding racing and industrial environments.

That heritage helps separate the GMR5 Series from many consumer-grade handheld radios. Rather than being designed solely for recreational use, the radios are based on a platform that has been tested in desert racing, off-road events, and professional applications where communication failures simply aren’t an option.

The addition of real-world validation at events like Easter Jeep Safari further reinforces Rugged Radios’ focus on building communication equipment specifically for off-road enthusiasts. Whether you’re leading a group ride, exploring remote backcountry trails, or simply looking for a dependable backup when cell service disappears, the GMR5 Series was developed with the needs of the off-road community in mind.
