The result is a cleaner installation that should be particularly useful in side-by-sides, trucks, Jeeps, SUVs, tractors, and overland vehicles already equipped with navigation displays, switch panels, accessory controllers, and other electronics.
“You asked for it, we built it,” Rugged Radios said when introducing the new radio. According to the company, the G2 Mini was developed in response to customers who wanted the performance of a mobile GMRS radio without having to accommodate a full-size chassis.

Compact Remote-Mount Design
Dashboard space has become increasingly valuable in modern UTVs. Many machines now come with factory displays, while owners frequently add GPS units, audio systems, switch panels, lighting controls, and other accessories.
The G2 Mini addresses that problem by moving the user interface away from the radio body. Its IP67-rated waterproof hand mic incorporates the microphone, high-visibility LED display, channel controls, and menu functions into one compact unit.
This allows the main radio chassis to be installed out of sight while the hand mic remains within easy reach of the driver. A magnetic mic mount helps provide a convenient storage point without requiring additional space for a traditional radio faceplate.
Rugged Radios also includes a universal mounting bracket for securing the radio body. Although the waterproof mic is well suited to an open-cab vehicle, the radio body and electrical connections should still be mounted in a protected location away from direct water, mud, and excessive heat.

30 Watts of GMRS Power
The G2 Mini delivers up to 30 watts of GMRS transmit power, giving it considerably more output than a typical handheld radio. When paired with a properly installed external antenna, a mobile radio can provide more consistent car-to-car communication than relying on a handheld radio from inside the vehicle.
Actual communication range will still depend on terrain, antenna selection, antenna placement, vegetation, and surrounding obstacles. A mountain or deep canyon can block even a high-powered signal, but the combination of a 30-watt mobile radio and an externally mounted antenna creates a strong foundation for group-ride communication.
Car-to-car communications can help keep a group moving by allowing drivers to call out turns, warn others about oncoming traffic or difficult trail conditions, and make sure no one becomes separated from the group. It also gives drivers a convenient way to point out landmarks, scenic stops, or other interesting features along the route.
AMPLIFY 2.0 Transmission Technology
The G2 Mini introduces Rugged Radios’ AMPLIFY 2.0 stable transmission technology. According to Rugged, the system uses a Mitsubishi transmit amplifier to maintain consistent output without power dropping off during extended transmissions.
That feature is intended to help the compact radio deliver the steady performance expected from a larger mobile unit. This could be particularly useful during longer transmissions when coordinating a group, describing a trail obstacle, or communicating during an emergency.
The radio is controlled through Rugged’s RIDEui menu system, which is designed to simplify channel selection, radio settings, and access to its more advanced features. Two programmable buttons, labeled P1 and P2, can be assigned to frequently used functions for quicker access.
GMRS Channels, Repeaters, and Trail Features
The G2 Mini includes 15 GMRS channels and 10 repeater channels. Repeater access can be particularly valuable in regions served by a compatible GMRS repeater because it may allow communication beyond the direct radio-to-radio range available in difficult terrain.
The radio also provides 259 privacy codes. Despite the name, these codes do not make a conversation private or prevent other people from hearing it. Instead, they filter incoming transmissions so the speaker only opens when the incoming signal uses the selected code.

No Cellular Service Required
Like other GMRS radios, the G2 Mini provides direct radio-to-radio communication without cellular coverage, subscriptions, or service plans. It can be used to coordinate trail rides, communicate between vehicles, stay connected around camp, or provide another communication option during an emergency.
The G2 Mini can communicate with compatible Rugged G1, GMR5, and GMR5-X handheld GMRS radios, as well as other GMRS and FRS radios operating on compatible channels and settings. A vehicle equipped with the G2 Mini could therefore communicate with handheld radios carried by spotters, passengers, camp personnel, or other members of a riding group.

Designed for Standalone Radio Communication
One important distinction is that the G2 Mini is not compatible with an in-vehicle intercom system. It is intended to operate as a standalone mobile radio using its hand mic and built-in speaker or an optional external speaker.
That makes the G2 Mini best suited for drivers who primarily want straightforward car-to-car communication. Riders who need wired helmet communications, voice-activated conversations between occupants, music integration, or intercom-based push-to-talk controls should instead consider one of Rugged Radios’ UTV intercom and radio kits.
The G2 Mini is not intended to replace those more comprehensive systems. It fills a different role by offering a clean, compact way to add a powerful GMRS mobile radio to a vehicle without installing a complete intercom system.

The Rugged Radios G2 Mini is priced at $250 for the radio-only package and is available through Rugged Radios and authorized dealers nationwide.
Buyers should note that an antenna and coax cable are not included with the base radio. Completing the installation will require a compatible GMRS antenna, coax cable, power connection, and an appropriate mounting location.
Antenna placement can have a major effect on real-world performance. For the best results, the antenna should be installed as high and unobstructed as practical while still remaining protected from branches, impacts, and other trail hazards.
