The Polaris RZR XP 900 helped establish the blueprint for the modern high-performance sport UTV. When it arrived for the 2011 model year, its 88-horsepower ProStar engine, 64-inch stance, low seating position and three-link trailing-arm rear suspension represented a dramatic step beyond the original RZR platform.

More than a decade later, the RZR XP 900 has been surpassed in horsepower, suspension travel and technology. However, its combination of low weight, responsive handling and strong naturally aspirated power still makes it an entertaining machine—and an important chapter in Polaris RZR history.

UTVGuide.net spent years driving, modifying and racing the XP 900 in the dunes, desert and rocks. That first-hand experience showed that the machine was far more than an impressive specification sheet. It was a versatile sport UTV that could transition from recreational riding to competition with relatively few changes.

Why the Polaris RZR XP 900 Was a Turning Point

The original RZR proved that a side-by-side could be compact, agile and genuinely fun to drive. The RZR XP 900 took that concept considerably further with a platform engineered specifically for higher speeds and more aggressive terrain.

At its center was the 875cc ProStar 900 twin-cylinder engine. Polaris positioned the engine behind the seats, helping lower the vehicle’s center of gravity while concentrating more of its mass inside the wheelbase. This layout contributed to the XP 900’s predictable handling and helped establish the rear-engine configuration that continues to define modern RZR performance models.

The XP 900 also moved to a 64-inch-wide chassis and introduced a three-link trailing-arm independent rear suspension. With 13.5 inches of front travel, 14 inches of rear travel and 13 inches of ground clearance, it was prepared for terrain that would quickly overwhelm earlier recreational UTVs.

Those figures may appear modest beside current turbocharged UTVs with more than 200 horsepower and over 20 inches of suspension travel. In 2011, however, the XP 900’s performance was transformative.

The ProStar 900 was one of the XP 900’s defining features. Its dual-overhead-cam design, four valves per cylinder, dual throttle bodies and 180-degree crankshaft produced quick throttle response and a broad, controllable powerband.

The engine produced 88 horsepower while the vehicle weighed approximately 1,190 pounds dry. That gave the XP 900 a strong power-to-weight ratio and acceleration that felt exceptional by early sport-UTV standards.

During our original RZR XP 900 test at Sand Mountain, a nearly stock machine was able to climb the steep backside of the mountain with two occupants. The wet sand certainly helped traction, but the XP completed climbs that we had not previously made in another UTV so close to stock.

The engine’s torque delivery was equally important. Rather than requiring an abrupt stab at the throttle, the XP 900 allowed the driver to feed power in progressively. That made it easier to manage traction when crossing dune faces, climbing loose hills or setting the vehicle up for a jump.

A stock XP 900 is generally capable of speeds around 70 mph under suitable conditions, although actual speed varies with elevation, tire size, vehicle condition, clutching and modifications. Its performance should be evaluated in the context of its low weight and compact dimensions rather than horsepower alone.

Suspension and Handling

While the ProStar engine attracted much of the attention, the XP 900’s suspension and chassis were just as important to its success.

The three-link trailing-arm rear suspension used two long radius rods and a trailing arm that connected far forward in the chassis. Up front, wider dual A-arms contributed to the XP 900’s 64-inch stance and increased suspension travel.

Our early dune testing showed how well the complete package worked. The XP 900 crossed sharp ridgelines with a stable and predictable feel, while the low center of gravity helped it remain composed through transitions. It also jumped remarkably well for a mostly stock machine, with the FOX 2.0 shocks absorbing landings that would have been significant events in earlier sport UTVs.

The relatively short wheelbase made the XP 900 responsive and easy to rotate, although it did not have the same ability to bridge deep whoops as today’s much longer sport UTVs. That compact chassis was part of its personality: quick, agile and engaging rather than isolated from the terrain.

As we spent more time with the platform, we explored how shock tuning and suspension changes could expand its capabilities. Our RZR XP 900 suspension development demonstrated how much performance remained available through properly selected springs, valving and components. We also tested a separate RZR XP 900 shock upgrade for riders who wanted better control in demanding terrain.

UTVGuide.net’s Long-Term RZR XP 900 Experience

UTVGuide.net’s experience with the XP 900 extended well beyond a short media drive. We owned and modified multiple XP 900s, using them for dune riding, desert exploration, rock crawling and racing.

Our 2011 Polaris RZR XP 900 long-term test documented trips to Sand Mountain, the Oregon Dunes, Glamis and destinations across Nevada. The machine was fitted with protection, audio, lighting, suspension improvements, seats, harnesses and other accessories as we adapted it for different types of riding.

One of the best examples of its versatility came at King of the Hammers. The XP 900 started 25th and finished fourth in the 2012 King of the Hammers UTV race. Soon afterward, it transitioned back to dune duty with only relatively minor changes.

That ability to work across multiple disciplines helped make the XP 900 such an influential platform. It was light and agile enough for technical terrain, powerful enough for the dunes and capable of being developed into a competitive race vehicle.

We continued exploring the platform with our 2013 Polaris RZR XP 900 LE long-term build. By that point, aftermarket companies had developed an enormous selection of suspension, protection, performance and comfort upgrades for the XP chassis.

2012 RZR XP 900 Updates

For 2012, Polaris revised the front suspension geometry to reduce steering effort and improve low-speed maneuverability. The FOX Podium X 2.0 shocks received convenient tool-free compression-adjustment knobs, while a rubber-isolated prop shaft and an anti-rattle passenger grab-bar bushing helped reduce cabin noise.

2013 RZR XP 900 Limited Editions

By 2013, Polaris offered several aggressively styled limited editions with combinations of electronic power steering, premium seats, painted suspension components, special graphics and upgraded wheel-and-tire packages.

RZR XP 4 900 and Jagged X Edition

The four-seat Polaris RZR XP 4 900 arrived for 2012. It retained the 88-horsepower ProStar engine but used a substantially longer chassis and upgraded rear shocks to accommodate four occupants.

The limited-production RZR XP 900 H.O. Jagged X Edition pushed the platform further. Based on the longer XP 4 chassis with the rear seats removed, it used a 94-horsepower high-output engine, stainless-steel SLP exhaust, PRP seats, factory doors, Walker Evans 2.5-inch rear shocks and additional cargo space.

Polaris introduced the RZR XP 1000 for 2014, moving the XP name to a more powerful and substantially revised platform. A related trailing-arm RZR 900 remained available for 2014, but Polaris no longer marketed it with the same XP designation. Later 50-inch RZR 900 and 60-inch RZR S 900 models should not be confused with the original 64-inch RZR XP 900.

How the XP 900 Compared With Its Early Rivals

When the XP 900 appeared, much of the sport side-by-side market still consisted of machines derived from utility-oriented platforms. Its 64-inch width, long-travel suspension, 81.4-inch wheelbase and strong power-to-weight ratio gave it a clear performance focus.

RZR XP 900 vs. Modern Sport UTVs

Modern sport UTVs are larger, faster and more sophisticated. Compared with a current RZR, the XP 900 has less power, shorter suspension travel, smaller shocks and tires, a more compact cockpit and far fewer electronic features.

Its basic rollover protection structure and occupant restraints also reflect the period in which it was built. Owners should carefully inspect all safety equipment and consider the machine’s age, previous use and condition before driving it aggressively.

However, the XP 900 retains several qualities that are increasingly difficult to find:

  • Simple controls and limited electronic intervention

What to Inspect When Buying a Used RZR XP 900

  • Maintenance history: Look for records showing regular engine-oil, transmission-fluid and air-filter service.
  • Air intake: Inspect the filter and intake tract for evidence of dust passing through the filtration system.
  • Engine condition: Check cold starting, idle quality, smoke, fluid leaks, abnormal noise and cooling-system operation.
  • CVT system: Inspect belt condition and watch for poor engagement, slipping or inconsistent clutch operation.
  • Suspension wear: Check wheel bearings, ball joints, bushings, radius rods, trailing arms and shock bodies.
  • Axles and CV boots: Look for torn boots, grease leakage, clicking or excessive play.
  • Frame and cage: Inspect for cracks, bends, repaired welds, corrosion and evidence of a rollover or hard impact.
  • Electrical accessories: Look for loose wiring, unprotected connections, overloaded circuits and poorly installed switches.

Many XP 900s have been used in dunes, desert races and technical terrain. Hard use does not automatically make a machine a poor purchase, but repairs and modifications should be evaluated carefully. A mostly stock vehicle with clear maintenance history may be preferable to a heavily modified example with unknown workmanship.
