To ring in the New Year, the RANGER RZR family welcomes a whole new class of Side x Side, introducing the Polaris RZR XP 900!
The RZR XP 900 has the only family of Sport Side x Sides with Razor Sharp Performance for all types of recreation. It all started in 2008 when Polaris introduced the only trail-capable Side x Side, the RZR 800. In 2009, came the only true-sport Side x Side, the RZR S 800. With the introduction of the RZR 4 800 in 2010, Polaris introduced the worlds only four-seat sport Side-by-Side. For 2011, the family adds the RZR XP 900, a whole new class of Side x Side that continues to offer the ultimate combination of power, suspension and agility and takes it to the extreme.
Built for razor-sharp, Xtreme performance, the RZR XP 900 has a new 88 horsepower, 900 Twin, Electronic Fuel Injected (EFI) engine, a new 3-Link Trailing Arm Independent Rear Suspension (IRS) with 13-inches of ground clearance and 14-inches of travel, and is light weight with a low center of gravity for unmatched cornering. These features make the RZR XP 900 the only extreme performance Side x Side on the market.
The RZR family delivers the ultimate combination of power, suspension and agility, said Matt Homan, vice president and general manager of Polaris Off-Road Vehicles Division. When we set out to design the RZR XP 900, we wanted to create a ground-breaking, high performance vehicle to complement our current, best-selling RZR line. The result is simply incredible.
The ultimate combination of power, suspension and agility starts with power. At the heart of the RZR XP 900 is the all-new, 88 horsepower ProStar 900 Twin EFI engine that was built specifically for an extreme-performance Side x Side. The engine features Dual OverHead Cams (DOHC), four big valves per cylinder and a 180-degree crankshaft for balanced performance and fast throttle response for groundbreaking acceleration. The combination of 88 horsepower with the vehicles light weight provides acceleration that is 29-percent quicker than the next quickest Side x Side on the market.
To complement the potent power plant, the RANGER RZR XP 900 features an all-new, lightweight, compact and durable transmission, also designed specifically for extreme Side x Side performance. Efficiency has been maximized by eliminating all right angle drives to the rear axle resulting in less friction and more power delivered directly to the rear wheels. And, the simple and efficient design also provides a very quiet transmission.
In order to handle the massive power of the new engine and keep the ride smooth, Polaris designed the all-new, 3-Link Trailing Arm IRS. The 3-link design consists of two extra-long radius rods and a far forward-connecting trailing arm resulting in a strong, yet lightweight system. The RANGER RZR XP 900 also is outfitted with adjustable, premium 2-inch body Fox Podium X 2.0 shocks. Its monstrous 14-inches of terrain-absorbing rear travel and 13.5-inches of front travel soak up the rough stuff and deliver a smooth, precise ride, while its astounding 13-inches of ground clearance gives the machine the ability to tackle any obstacle in its way.
For razor-sharp agility, RANGER RZR XP 900 has no equal. Even with its incredible ground clearance, the unit still features a low center of gravity for the ultimate ride over rough terrain. The patented, engine-behind-the-seat design and rear weight bias deliver extreme, razor-sharp agility and performance, while the race-inspired rear suspension maximizes traction and power in the corners. To provide precise cornering, the suspensions radius rods extend deep into the wheel hubs and feature an uneven link geometry that optimizes camber. Tires lean into the corner through the suspension travel, and plant more tire surface on the ground for maximum control. The trailing arms also minimize wheel scrub for superior straight-away power to help the driver stay true to line.
A premium vehicle needs premium features, and the RANGER RZR XP 900 has many. The machine features the industrys first factory LED headlights that shine a high-intensity beam to turn night into day and throw light forward beyond conventional halogens. For ultimate stopping power, the RANGER RZR XP 900 has performance brake calipers and large diameter, ventilated rotors on all four wheels. To complement the new suspension, the RANGER RZR XP 900 is outfitted with completely adjustable Fox Podium X 2.0 shocks on all four wheels. The Fox Podium X 2.0 shocks have a 2-inch body with piggyback reservoirs that provide adjustable pre-load and compression dampening. For high performance riding, ITP 900 XCT tires provide a unique, directional lug pattern for exceptional cornering and straight-line traction capabilities. To maximize cooling capacity, the unit features a massive grill opening and a front air dam for improved air flow. For safety, the RANGER RZR XP 900 has a certified roll-over protective structure (ROPS).
The RANGER RZR XP 900 is offered in Indy Red and a White Lightening limited edition model, and will be available at Polaris dealerships in January. More than 70 PURE Polaris accessories, including cargo boxes, winches and protection also will be available at launch.

2012 Polaris RZR XP:
The newest member of the RANGER RZR family, the RANGER RZR XP 900, introduced the industry to a whole new class of Side x Side that took the ultimate combination of power, suspension and agility to the extreme. The RANGER RZR XP 900 will continue to offer all of the aspects that make it the most extreme performing Side-by-Side on the market; 900 Twin DOHC Electronic Fuel Injected (EFI) engine, 3-Link Trailing Arm Independent Rear Suspension (IRS) with 13-inches of ground clearance and 14-inches of travel, and a light vehicle weight with a low center of gravity for unmatched cornering with the addition of few upgrades for 2012 to give the unit even more extreme performance. For quick suspension adjustments, the Fox 2.0 shocks feature new, convenient compression adjustment knobs for tool-less tuning. To reduce driveline noise, the unit has a new, rubber isolated prop shaft. For less steering effort and increased maneuverability at slow speeds, Polaris redesigned the front suspension geometry. In the cab, all units feature a new passenger grab bar tube with an anti-rattle bushing for reduced noise.

Sport UTV Comparison:
There is no doubt that the RZR XP has raised the bar for the sport UTV market segment. Horsepower coupled with an advanced suspension is sure to be a big hit in the dunes and desert. After you take a look at a few key components of the RZR XP and compare them to other sport UTVs, you will see there are some key advantages.
Suspension Design
When it comes to wheel travel, the RZR XP has 13.5 inches in the front and 14 inches in the rear. The only other UTV that even comes close is the Polaris RZR S. The Can-Am Commander and Arctic Cat Prowler have 10″, and the Rhino and Teryx have less than 8″.
Add to amount of wheel travel that the RZR XP comes with Fox Podium X 2.0 shocks that have a 2-inch body with piggyback reservoirs. These Fox shocks also provide adjustable pre-load and compression dampening.
Even more exciting than the amount of wheel travel is the advanced, 3-Link Trailing Arm IRS. The two extra-long radius rods connect far-forward under the seats for superior handling in rough terrain, especially at high speeds.
Wheelbase
When you look at performance through rough terrain, short-wheelbase UTV have a hard time going as fast as their engine will push them. This is one of the reasons that the RZR 4 does so much better right out of the box. But when we look at the Can-Am Commander, Kawasaki Teryx, Yamaha Rhino and Arctic Cat Prowler, they all have a wheelbase between 75″ – 76″.
The new RZR XP has a wheelbase of 81.4″. That extra 4+ inches will make a big difference when you are trying to fly through the whoops at 60 mph.
What makes the long wheel base on the RZR XP even more impressive is the RZR XP has an overall vehicle length that is actually 7″ – 10″ shorter other sport UTVs. Let me make sure you got that – longer wheelbase AND shorter overall.
Horsepower
Although the RZR XP has less cc’s than the Can-Am Commander (875cc vs. 976cc), the advertised horsepower of the RZR XP is 88 and the Commander is 85. Nearly identical, but now let’s take a look at horsepower to weight ratio. The RZR XP has a dry weight of 1,190 lbs. and the Commander sits at 1,287 lbs. So when you divide that out, the RZR XP has 13.5 lbs./horsepower and the Commander has 15.1 lbs./horsepower. When you are looking at a vehicle that puts out less than 100 HP, horsepower to weight ratio is very important.
All of the other sport UTVs don’t even come close in stock form.
Center of Gravity
Following along with all of its RZR cousins, the Polaris has placed the engine in the RZR XP behind the seats. This patented engine placement allows for driver and passenger to sit much lower in the chassis which lowers the center of gravity. A lower center of gravity allows the RZR XP to act more like sports car than a truck.
Width
It is hard to compare the width of the RZR XP to anything other than the RZR S since none of the other manufacturer’s UTVs come with long travel suspension. More width adds to stability when cornering or while rock crawling.
The RZR XP is 64″ wide. That is 4″ wider than the RZR S and 9+ inches wider than a Yamaha Rhino.
The downside to the extra width of the RZR XP is its ability to get onto some of the narrow forest service trails. It is pretty obvious that Polaris intends to market the 50″ RZR for that and focus on the open desert and dunes for the RZR XP.
Sport UTV Comparison:
UTV | Length | Wheelbase | Width | Ground Clearance | Wheel Travel | Weight | Engine | Horsepower |
Arctic Cat Prowler 1000 | 115″ | 75″ | 58″ | 10″ | 10″ | 1165 lbs. | 951cc | 70* |
Can-Am Commander | 118″ | 75.8″ | 58″ | 10″ | 11″ | 1287 lbs. | 976cc | 85 |
Kawasaki Teryx | 115.7″ | 75.8″ | 58.3″ | 11.2″ | 7.5″ | 1276 lbs. | 750cc | 50 |
Yamaha Rhino | 113.6″ | 75.2″ | 54.4″ | 12.1″ | 7.3″ | 1049 lbs. | 686cc | 40.2 |
Polaris RZR S | 103″ | 77″ | 60″ | 12.5″ | 12″ | 1000 lbs. | 760cc | 55 |
Polaris RZR XP | 108.4″ | 81.4″ | 64″ | 13″ | 13.5/14″ | 1190 lbs. | 875cc | 88 |
