The 2024 Polaris RANGER XD 1500 introduced an entirely new extreme-duty utility UTV platform with a 1,498cc three-cylinder engine, 110 horsepower, 105 lb-ft of torque and Polaris’ STEELDRIVE transmission. Rated to tow 3,500 pounds and carry 1,500 pounds in its cargo box, the XD 1500 was designed for farmers, ranchers, hunters and property owners who needed more capability than a conventional full-size utility side-by-side could provide.
Polaris unveiled the RANGER XD 1500 on July 30, 2023, as a 2024 model. It was not simply a larger or more powerful Polaris RANGER. The company developed an entirely new engine, transmission, chassis, cargo box, cab and accessory system to create what it called the industry’s first extreme-duty utility side-by-side.

A New Extreme-Duty RANGER
Polaris said it spent more than five years meeting with farmers, ranchers, large-property owners and big-game hunters before developing the XD 1500. Those customers wanted a utility vehicle capable of handling heavier trailers, larger cargo loads and longer workdays while maintaining the maneuverability of a side-by-side.
The result was a substantially larger and stronger platform positioned above the RANGER XP 1000. Its major upgrades included the ProStar 1500 engine, STEELDRIVE transmission, a one-piece steel chassis, increased cab space, a larger cargo box and a redesigned NorthStar enclosure.
“A segment of our utility customers said they are facing exceptionally large tasks and they simply need a machine with more power, more torque, more hauling and towing capacity, and more durability,” said Chris Judson, then vice president of Off Road Utility for Polaris.
1,498cc ProStar Three-Cylinder Engine
At the center of the RANGER XD 1500 is a 1,498cc ProStar three-cylinder engine producing 110 horsepower and 105 lb-ft of torque. At launch, Polaris claimed the engine delivered more than 30% more power and over 50% more torque than its closest competing utility UTV.
The engine was tuned to move heavy loads rather than chase peak sport-UTV performance. Its broad torque delivery helps the vehicle accelerate with a loaded cargo box, pull trailers and maintain speed across hills and uneven terrain.

STEELDRIVE Transmission
The RANGER XD 1500 also debuted Polaris’ STEELDRIVE automatic transmission. Instead of the replaceable rubber belt used by a conventional UTV continuously variable transmission, STEELDRIVE employs a steel belt operating inside a fully sealed and liquid-cooled housing.
The design was engineered to provide several advantages for an extreme-duty work vehicle:
- Durability: The sealed steel-belt system was designed for heavy towing, hauling and long operating cycles.
- Smooth engagement: Predictable power delivery makes it easier to approach a trailer, move through confined work areas or maintain a steady pace while spraying.
- Reduced maintenance: The steel belt is not a routine replacement item like a conventional exposed CVT belt.
- Quiet operation: The sealed design helps reduce drivetrain noise inside the cab.
- Controlled shifting: An electronic selector provides straightforward changes between Park, Drive and Reverse.
The XD 1500 does not use a conventional High and Low range selector. Instead, the transmission manages its ratio electronically while the driver selects the appropriate operating mode. Our separate guide explains how the Polaris STEELDRIVE transmission works and what we learned while driving it in real-world conditions.
Hill Assist and Engine Braking
Hill Assist helps prevent the vehicle from rolling backward when the driver transitions from the brake to the accelerator on an incline. The drivetrain also maintains engagement while descending, providing controlled engine braking.
Payload, trailer weight, traction and slope angle can all affect vehicle control. The transmission should never be treated as a substitute for selecting Park, setting the parking brake or properly securing a vehicle left on an incline.
3,500-Pound Towing Capacity
The 2024 RANGER XD 1500 was rated to tow up to 3,500 pounds—approximately 1,000 pounds more than the 2,500-pound rating commonly associated with full-size RANGER models at the time.
That additional capacity made the XD 1500 better suited to moving loaded utility trailers, livestock equipment, feed, materials and other heavy property-maintenance loads. Polaris supported the increased rating with a stronger chassis, upgraded brakes, heavy-duty suspension components and the torque of the three-cylinder engine.
1,500-Pound Cargo-Box Capacity
The hydraulic-assist dump box can carry up to 1,500 pounds, giving the RANGER XD 1500 a three-quarter-ton cargo rating. Polaris also increased the physical volume of the box, allowing owners to move bulkier loads with fewer trips.
NorthStar models added an electronically controlled power-dump box, reducing the effort required to unload dirt, gravel, firewood, feed or other heavy material.
Heavy-Duty Chassis and Suspension
The XD 1500 uses a one-piece, high-strength steel chassis that Polaris said delivered 160% more torsional stiffness than its previous utility UTV platforms. Increased chassis rigidity supports towing and cargo capacity while also helping the suspension work more consistently over uneven terrain.
Every original XD 1500 trim provided 15 inches of ground clearance and high-clearance arched A-arms. The vehicle also received heavy-duty suspension components and more powerful brakes to manage its size, weight and payload ratings.
That capability does not make the XD 1500 a dedicated rock crawler. The platform is best suited to property work, towing, hunting, ranch roads and general trail use rather than extremely slow technical terrain.
Four RANGER XD 1500 Drive Modes
A rotary selector allows the driver to choose between four operating modes:
- Comfort: Softens throttle response and reduces engine braking for quieter, smoother operation.
- Standard: Provides balanced throttle response and moderate engine braking for everyday driving.
- Sport: Sharpens throttle response and reduces engine braking for more responsive recreational driving.
- Tow/Haul: Prioritizes torque delivery and limits vehicle speed while carrying or pulling heavy loads.
Larger and More Comfortable Interior
Polaris gave the XD 1500 a wider, more spacious cab with increased shoulder room and legroom. The seating position, adjustable driver’s seat and telescoping steering wheel allow drivers of different heights to find a comfortable position.
The contoured three-person bench includes additional bolstering, while the center section folds down to become an armrest with cup holders when a third passenger is not aboard. Integrated sun visors were also standard on the enclosed NorthStar models.
RANGER XD 1500 NorthStar Cab
The NorthStar Premium and NorthStar Ultimate trims came with a factory-installed enclosure featuring heat and air conditioning, power windows, lockable full doors and a fixed glass windshield.
Polaris redesigned the ProShield cab around the new chassis to improve sealing against dust and water intrusion. The more rigid frame also helps maintain alignment between the doors, windows, windshield and roof.
Our later testing reinforced the importance of that redesign. During our RANGER XD 1500 Mountaineer Edition review, the NorthStar enclosure proved to be one of the better-sealed factory UTV cabs we have tested in dry, dusty conditions.
RIDE COMMAND and JBL Audio
The NorthStar Ultimate included a waterproof 7-inch RIDE COMMAND touchscreen with GPS mapping, a backup camera, vehicle information, AM/FM radio and Bluetooth audio streaming.
RIDE COMMAND+ added connected-vehicle functions through the Polaris app, including vehicle location, maintenance reminders, diagnostic information and vehicle-health monitoring.
Polaris also partnered with JBL to develop a factory audio system for the NorthStar Ultimate. Owners wanting more output could add the JBL Trail Pro 4200 accessory system with rear speakers and two subwoofers.
Lock & Ride MAX Accessories
More than 70 accessories were developed for the new platform. The centerpiece was Lock & Ride MAX, a modular cargo-box attachment system that lets owners install and reposition compatible racks, tool holders and cargo accessories without permanent modifications.
Other major accessory options included:
- Glacier Pro HD 84-inch snowplow
- Hydraulic plow lift and angle controls
- Rhino-Rack storage solutions
- Pro Armor accessories
- Kolpin work and hunting equipment
- Additional JBL audio components
- Lighting, cab and cargo-management accessories

Why the RANGER XD 1500 Was Significant
The 2024 RANGER XD 1500 moved the utility UTV category closer to compact truck territory without giving up the off-road dimensions, ground clearance and maneuverability that make a side-by-side useful on farms, ranches and remote property.
Its 110-horsepower engine drew attention, but the larger story was the complete platform surrounding it. The 3,500-pound towing rating, 1,500-pound cargo box, STEELDRIVE transmission, rigid chassis and well-sealed NorthStar cab collectively separated the XD 1500 from existing full-size utility UTVs.
Polaris subsequently expanded the platform with additional configurations and special editions, but the original 2024 three-seat lineup established the foundation.
