The Kubota RTV520 is the smallest utility vehicle in Kubota’s current RTV lineup, but its compact dimensions are exactly what make it useful. At just 54.7 inches wide, the two-seat RTV520 can negotiate narrow gates, barns, landscaping, wooded paths and confined jobsites that may be difficult to access with a full-size utility UTV.

Power comes from a 514cc, two-cylinder gasoline engine producing 17.4 horsepower. Kubota pairs it with a beltless Variable Hydrostatic Transmission rather than the conventional continuously variable transmission used by most gas-powered UTVs.

The result is a compact work vehicle designed around controlled operation, maneuverability and ease of ownership—not high-speed trail riding. Its 25-mph top speed, 440-pound cargo-box capacity and 1,168-pound towing rating make the RTV520 best suited to property maintenance, landscaping, livestock chores and other lighter utility work.

514cc Gas Engine Prioritizes Usable Power

The RTV520 is powered by a Kubota-built, liquid-cooled, two-cylinder gasoline engine. Its 514cc displacement and 17.4-horsepower rating are modest compared with recreational UTVs, but maximum output is not the primary goal.

Electronic fuel injection supports dependable cold-weather starting and consistent throttle response as operating conditions change. Liquid cooling helps the engine maintain a stable temperature during extended work, while an engine balancer and 360-degree crankshaft are intended to reduce vibration reaching the occupants.

The RTV520 has a maximum travel speed of approximately 25 mph. That is sufficient for moving around a smaller property or worksite, but buyers who regularly cover long distances may want more speed. Kubota’s 54-horsepower RTV-XG850 Sidekick can reach 40 mph and is better suited to combining work with recreational transportation.

How the Kubota VHT Transmission Works

One of the RTV520’s most important differences is its VHT PLUS Variable Hydrostatic Transmission. Unlike a conventional UTV CVT, the Kubota system does not rely on a drive belt and centrifugal clutches to transfer engine power.

The hydrostatic design provides smooth acceleration and precise control at low speeds. It also produces dynamic braking when the operator releases the accelerator, which can help control the vehicle on descents and during jobs requiring frequent stops.

This behavior may require a short adjustment period for someone accustomed to a belt-driven UTV. Releasing the accelerator produces a more immediate reduction in speed instead of allowing the vehicle to coast freely.

High and low forward ranges allow the operator to match the drivetrain to the job. Low range is the appropriate choice when towing, carrying a heavier load or working slowly on steep or uneven terrain.

Selectable Four-Wheel Drive and Differential Lock

The RTV520 allows the operator to select two-wheel drive or four-wheel drive. A mechanically operated differential lock provides additional traction when the ground becomes muddy, soft or uneven.

Its suspension combines independent MacPherson struts at the front with a rigid rear axle located by a five-link system. This is a work-oriented arrangement intended to balance stability, durability and occupant comfort rather than provide the long suspension travel associated with a recreational side-by-side.

Ground clearance measures 8.9 inches at the front axle and 6.7 inches at the rear. That is adequate for maintained roads, fields, lawns and moderate trails, but it is another indication that the RTV520 is not designed as a rock-crawling or aggressive trail machine.

Compact 54.7-Inch Width

The RTV520’s greatest advantage may be its physical size. It measures 54.7 inches wide, 105.1 inches long and 74 inches tall. Its 70.9-inch wheelbase and approximately 21.7-foot turning diameter help it maneuver around buildings, landscaping and other obstacles.

Although it is wider than a 50-inch trail-class UTV, the RTV520 remains substantially narrower and shorter than many full-size utility vehicles. That can make it a practical option for:

• Traveling through narrow gates and established pathways
• Working inside barns, nurseries and commercial facilities
• Maintaining landscaped properties without using an oversized vehicle
• Moving tools and supplies around a compact jobsite

440-Pound Steel Cargo Bed

The steel cargo box measures 40.6 inches wide, 33.6 inches long and 11.3 inches deep. Its 8.9-cubic-foot volume and 440-pound load rating provide useful capacity for tools, feed, mulch, firewood and maintenance supplies.

A manual dump function helps unload loose material and also provides access to service points beneath the bed. An optional power lift can reduce the effort required to dump heavier loads.

The RTV520 is rated to tow up to 1,168 pounds and comes prepared for trailer use. As with any UTV, the operator should account for trailer tongue weight, cargo, occupants, terrain and braking distance rather than looking only at the maximum tow rating.

Kubota also offers the RTV520 Crossroads Package for buyers who want a more completely equipped vehicle without selecting individual cab and work accessories. Originally introduced in 2024 as the limited-edition RTV520 Crossroads Edition, the package combines several frequently requested accessories into a factory-installed configuration.

Crossroads equipment includes:

• Full cab enclosure
• Tilt-out windshield
• Sliding side windows
• Removable doors
• Front and rear LED work lights
• Large glovebox
• Poly cargo-bed mat
• Black alloy wheels

The removable doors allow additional airflow during warmer weather, while the enclosed cab provides more protection during cold, wet or dusty work. The front and rear work lights are also useful for snow removal, feeding livestock and completing property-maintenance jobs before sunrise or after dark.

The Crossroads Package does not add engine power, cargo capacity or towing capability. It retains the RTV520’s 514cc gasoline engine, Variable Hydrostatic Transmission, 440-pound cargo-box rating and 1,168-pound towing capacity. Its primary advantage is convenience: the cab and popular accessories are installed as a coordinated package.

Buyers should note that the Crossroads cab does not include factory air conditioning. It provides considerably more weather protection than an open RTV520, but it is not an HVAC-equipped utility vehicle like the larger diesel Kubota RTV-X CAB.

Kubota does not publish a standard MSRP for the current Crossroads Package, directing buyers to participating dealers for pricing and availability.

Cab, Snowplow and Work Accessories

Kubota offers accessories that can turn the RTV520 into a more specialized property-maintenance vehicle. Available cab components include a roof, windshield, rear panel and doors. A heater can provide additional cold-weather comfort, although this modular enclosure should not be confused with the fully integrated factory HVAC cab offered on the larger diesel Kubota RTV-X family.

Other available equipment includes LED work lights, a winch, front protection and a 60-inch snow blade. The snow blade uses electric lift with manual angle adjustment, with an electric-angle accessory also available.

These accessories can make the RTV520 useful throughout the year, but they can also add substantially to its final purchase price. Buyers should compare the complete equipped price instead of considering only the base MSRP.

Who Should Buy a Kubota RTV520?

The Kubota RTV520 makes the most sense for someone who values compact dimensions, low-speed control and straightforward operation more than travel speed or maximum payload.

It is particularly well suited to:

• Homeowners and estate managers with narrow access points
• Landscaping and grounds-maintenance crews
• Horse farms and livestock operations
• Municipalities, schools and commercial properties
• Operators who prefer a beltless hydrostatic transmission
• Buyers who want a smaller vehicle for snow removal and seasonal chores

The RTV520 is less appropriate for buyers who need four seats, frequently haul close to 1,000 pounds, travel quickly across a large ranch or expect recreational suspension performance. Kubota offers larger and more specialized RTV models for those priorities.

Kubota RTV520 vs. Sidekick and RTV-X

The Sidekick is the better choice when speed and acceleration are priorities. The diesel RTV-X family provides greater cargo capacity and a broader range of heavy-duty configurations. The RTV520 remains the logical choice when the larger machines simply take up too much space.

Used Kubota RTV520 Recall Check

Buyers considering a used RTV520 should check its serial number and service history. A Kubota safety recall announced in 2025 covered certain RTV520 utility vehicles produced within specified serial-number ranges because a front suspension ball joint could loosen and separate.

Kubota instructed owners of affected vehicles to stop using them until an authorized dealer completed the free inspection and repair. Is the Kubota RTV520 a Good Utility Vehicle?

The Kubota RTV520 fills a useful space between small recreational machines and full-size work UTVs. Its 17.4-horsepower engine will not win a drag race, and its 440-pound cargo-box rating limits the size of the jobs it can perform. Those compromises come with a genuinely compact footprint, simple controls and a beltless hydrostatic transmission that provides excellent low-speed control.

For maintaining a smaller property, navigating tight gates or completing chores where precision matters more than speed, the RTV520 may be the most practical vehicle in Kubota’s lineup. Buyers needing greater speed, passenger capacity or heavy hauling should step up to the Sidekick or one of the full-size diesel RTV-X models.
