John Deere Gator Racing History: RSX850i and XUV

John Deere Gator Racing RSX850i

John Deere is best known in the side-by-side market for building utility vehicles, but for a brief period the familiar green-and-yellow Gator became a legitimate UTV race platform. Modified John Deere Gator XUV 825i and RSX850i machines competed in Best in the Desert and the World Off-Road Championship Series, earning class victories in short-course and desert racing.

The effort was concentrated between 2012 and 2014 and was driven primarily by Vigor Motorsports and Magnum Off Road rather than a long-running factory race team. Even so, the program produced an unusual chapter in the history of the John Deere Gator: a work-oriented XUV won desert races, the sportier RSX850i helped establish an 850cc professional class, and both platforms proved that a Gator could do considerably more than work around a farm or jobsite.

The results above come from UTVGuide.net’s original coverage. Class structures and names changed during this period, and some reports described the same Gator under slightly different class terminology.

Racing the Utility-Focused Gator XUV 825i

John Deere’s desert-racing story began before the RSX850i arrived. The Gator XUV 825i was designed primarily for work, with a three-cylinder engine, a large cargo box and utility-oriented dimensions. It was not an obvious starting point for a desert race vehicle, but that made the effort particularly interesting.

At the 2012 Mint 400, Scott Martinez finished sixth in the Pro UTV class in a John Deere Gator XUV 825i. Lucas Hand also started the event in a Gator 825i. Against lighter and more recreation-focused UTVs, merely finishing the Mint demonstrated the basic durability of the platform.

Vigor Motorsports and Magnum Off Road continued developing the XUV for the Pro DSR1 class. The race vehicle retained the identity of a Gator, but suspension, occupant protection, drivetrain setup and other components had to be adapted for sustained desert speeds and hundreds of miles of punishment. For technical background on the production platform, see the John Deere Gator 825i model history and specifications.

The RSX850i Opens a New Door

The introduction of the John Deere Gator RSX850i for the 2013 model year gave racers a much better performance foundation. Its 839cc V-twin produced 62 horsepower, while its compact 56.5-inch width, independent suspension and available FOX shocks made it substantially sportier than Deere’s conventional XUV models.

It still was not a pure sport UTV. The RSX850i retained a cargo box, a 1,200-pound towing rating and the practical character expected from the Gator name. But it was quick enough and responsive enough to be developed for both short-course and desert competition. Our original John Deere Gator RSX850i review found the stock machine capable on Moab slickrock, in sand washes and on the dunes, providing a useful baseline for what the race teams started with.

First John Deere Gator in WORCS Short-Course Racing

Magnum Off Road and Vigor Motorsports entered Daniel Rosenzweig in the 2013 WORCS season opener at Canyon Raceway in Peoria, Arizona. According to the team’s contemporary report, it was the first time they knew of a John Deere Gator being raced in a short-course setting.

The race was held in miserable conditions. Heavy rain turned the course into mud and standing water, forcing officials to modify the layout. Rosenzweig qualified third in class and ran as high as second before an off-course excursion in poor visibility dropped the No. 138 RSX850i to fourth in the Production 850 class.

The result itself was modest, but the debut mattered. A John Deere was now lining up against Polaris, Kawasaki and other established UTV race platforms in a national series. The RSX850i also completed the mud-soaked race without the engine problems that could easily end a first outing.

Developing Two Different John Deere Race Gators

Vigor Motorsports effectively ran two parallel development programs. The RSX850i competed in production-based 850cc and Pro UTV classes, while the older XUV was developed for DSR1. Each exposed different strengths and weaknesses.

At the 2013 Silver State 300, Scott Martinez and co-driver J.D. Bongiovanni drove the RSX850i to seventh place. A nut came off the front end around race mile 182, forcing the team to limp to a pit for repairs, but the Gator returned to race pace and reached the finish. The team reported completing the event without changing a tire.

The XUV DSR1 driven by Matt Krimple and Mike Mercurio had a more difficult race. A front suspension pivot failed around mile 97. The team repaired it, continued and then suffered another failure around mile 197. The contrast illustrated the reality of developing race vehicles from production utility platforms: durability was not a fixed trait but something refined one component and one race at a time.

The First John Deere WORCS Podium

The RSX850i program progressed during the 2013 WORCS season. At Sand Hollow in Utah, Rosenzweig gave John Deere and the RSX850i their first WORCS podium. He won the Production 700 class and finished sixth overall in the combined race.

That achievement was more significant than the class name suggests. The Gator was competing on a course that combined high-speed sections with rough natural terrain, giving the team evidence that its suspension and chassis development were working in more than one type of racing.

Daniel Rosenzweig and the No. 138 RSX850i competed in the 2013 WORCS 850 Production class.

Not every round went smoothly. At Glen Helen, an aftermarket throttle-body linkage stuck wide open as Rosenzweig entered a corner. The Gator ended up perched on a K-rail, and Rosenzweig reportedly completed another lap while controlling the throttle by hand before the team was credited with a DNF.

The team rebounded at Honey Lake Raceway in September. Rosenzweig moved the RSX850i into second and challenged for the lead near the checkered flag, but the narrow course closed the passing opportunity. Second place gave the program another podium and left the Gator fourth in the WORCS 850-class standings with one round remaining.

The XUV DSR1 Becomes a Desert-Racing Winner

The John Deere Gator XUV DSR1 earned its second consecutive class victory at the 2013 Henderson 250.

While the RSX850i attracted attention as Deere’s sportiest Gator, the modified XUV was building a winning record in Best in the Desert. At the 2013 Henderson 250, Matt and Sarah Krimple drove it to a second consecutive DSR1 class victory. UTVGuide.net’s contemporary report called it John Deere’s second victory in UTV off-road racing.

The RSX850i, driven at Henderson by Mike Mercurio and Scott Martinez, finished 11th in class and recorded its fourth consecutive desert-race finish. The weekend showed the complementary roles of the two vehicles: the RSX was the faster, production-based recreational model, while the extensively developed XUV was becoming a dependable class winner.

Helping Create a Pro 850 UTV Class

Best in the Desert added a Pro UTV 850 class for the 2014 season after seeking commitments from racers with machines under 850cc.

By late 2013, many popular UTVs were being overshadowed by newer 1000cc machines. Best in the Desert sought commitments for a separate Pro UTV 850 class for 2014, creating a place for vehicles such as the RSX850i, Kawasaki Teryx, Polaris RZR S and Yamaha Rhino to compete for professional points and payouts without racing directly against the latest 1000cc UTVs.

Vigor Motorsports supported the effort by offering additional race and year-end contingency money. The team’s involvement is an important part of the Deere story because the RSX850i did not merely enter an existing class—it helped demonstrate why an under-850cc professional category could still attract credible race vehicles.

John Deere Sweeps Its Classes at the 2014 Parker 250

Scott and Rachel Martinez won the new Pro 850 class at the 2014 Parker 250 and finished seventh UTV overall.

The strongest single weekend in John Deere’s UTV racing chapter came at the 2014 Parker 250. Vigor Motorsports and Magnum Off Road entered an RSX850i in the newly created Pro 850 class and an XUV in DSR1.

Scott and Rachel Martinez drove the RSX850i to first in Pro 850 and seventh UTV overall. The Gator reportedly completed the rough Parker course without a mechanical problem. After spending the previous season racing against 1000cc machines, the team immediately capitalized on the more appropriate class structure.

Matt Krimple and J.D. Bongiovanni won DSR1 in the XUV and finished fifth UTV overall, extending that Gator’s class-winning streak to three races. Both John Deere entries therefore won their respective classes, and both placed inside the top seven UTVs overall.

Back-to-Back January Victories

One week after the Parker 250, Daniel Rosenzweig won the 850 Production class at the 2014 WORCS season opener.

One week after Parker, Daniel Rosenzweig put the short-course RSX850i on top at the 2014 WORCS season opener in Taft, California. Rosenzweig took the lead early and stayed there to win the 850 Production class.

The back-to-back victories were the high point of the RSX850i racing program. In the span of approximately one week, separate desert and short-course versions of the Gator had won in two major western racing series.

A Brutal 2014 Mint 400

The following Mint 400 provided a sharp reminder that momentum does not guarantee desert-racing success. The XUV DSR1 entered with a three-race winning streak but suffered a drivetrain-component failure around mile 60.

The RSX850i had an eventful race of its own. Scott Martinez and his co-drivers stopped repeatedly to repair damage from rock impacts, including damage that cost the Gator four-wheel drive. Despite those problems, the RSX briefly held the class lead on course and reached the finish only 4 minutes, 34 seconds behind the class winner. It placed 12th among more than 50 UTV entries according to the original team recap.

The result was not another victory, but it reinforced the quality that repeatedly appeared in the team’s reports: the Gators often continued after failures that would have ended a less persistent effort.

Winning the 2014 Vegas to Reno

Vigor Motorsports entered both the XUV DSR1 and RSX850i in the 534-mile 2014 Vegas to Reno.

The 2014 Vegas to Reno became the program’s defining endurance result. The race covered 534 miles from near Beatty to the finish in the Dayton area, making it one of the most demanding events on the Best in the Desert schedule.

Matt Krimple, Mike Mercurio and rookie co-driver Steve McLean kept the No. 1971 XUV DSR1 running near the front. Apart from a stop to clear clutch dust, the Gator ran cleanly and won DSR1 while finishing eighth UTV overall. The result gave the team a solid class points lead.

The No. 1961 RSX850i led its class before a mechanical failure stopped it near one of the most remote pits. After waiting hours for assistance and making repairs, the team changed its objective from winning to finishing and preserving championship points. Scott Martinez and the rotating driver and co-driver team ultimately brought the RSX across the finish line 22 hours and 21 minutes after it started. It placed second in class and 13th UTV overall.

Was This a Factory John Deere Racing Program?

The surviving UTVGuide.net coverage documents a serious John Deere racing presence, but it should not be confused with the large factory programs later created by Polaris and Can-Am. The campaign was centered on Vigor Motorsports and Magnum Off Road, with extensive support from aftermarket companies and dealers.

John Deere and Piaggio—the company connected with the RSX850i engine—appeared in the broader support network, but the race reports consistently show that vehicle development, preparation and competition were driven by the independent team. Calling it a Vigor Motorsports/Magnum Off Road Gator racing program is more accurate than presenting it as a full John Deere factory team.

Why John Deere Gator Racing Faded

The Gator racing effort was tied closely to a specific moment in UTV development. The RSX850i arrived when production classes could still accommodate sub-1000cc machines, but performance moved quickly. Wider chassis, longer suspension travel, turbocharged engines and increasingly specialized race platforms changed the competitive landscape.

John Deere updated the recreational Gator into the RSX860 family but eventually discontinued the line. The company returned its UTV focus to utility, agriculture, hauling, all-weather comfort and commercial work. Today’s John Deere Gator lineup has no direct descendant of the RSX race platform.

Independent teams also face practical limits. Developing two unconventional race vehicles, maintaining a chase program and competing through complete WORCS and Best in the Desert seasons requires significant time and funding. Without a continuing production sport model or a major factory-backed program, the Deere racing chapter naturally came to an end.

What the John Deere Gator Race Program Proved

John Deere never became a dominant brand in UTV racing, and the RSX850i did not displace the Polaris RZR, Can-Am Maverick or other purpose-built sport machines. That was not necessary for the program to matter.

The racing effort proved that the Gator name could stretch well beyond its utility origins. A modified XUV won desert races and finished eighth UTV overall at Vegas to Reno. The RSX850i earned WORCS podiums, won in both WORCS and Best in the Desert, helped establish a professional 850cc class and repeatedly finished extremely difficult desert events.

Most importantly, these results preserve a side of John Deere history that is easy to overlook. For a few seasons, green-and-yellow Gators were not hauling feed, tools or firewood. They were lining up on short courses, crossing hundreds of miles of Nevada desert and winning UTV classes.
