How to Use GMRS Repeaters While Off-Roading

Imagine being able to talk with the rest of your group after they disappear over the next ridge or continue several miles down the trail. In terrain where direct radio-to-radio communication would normally fail, a GMRS repeater may keep everyone connected.

That can be especially valuable when someone misses a turn, a vehicle breaks down, or part of the group is delayed at an obstacle. California’s Rubicon Trail offers a real-world example: an elevated GMRS repeater helps licensed users communicate across terrain filled with granite ridges, forests, and deep drainages.

If you own a current Rugged Radios GMRS mobile radio or repeater-compatible handheld, you are already equipped to use the eight standardized GMRS repeater channels. In most cases, you simply find a repeater serving your riding area, select its channel, enter the specified tone, and test your radio before the ride.

How a GMRS Repeater Extends Range

Most UTV groups communicate directly from one radio to another. This is known as simplex communication, and it works well while vehicles remain relatively close together.

The problem is that GMRS performance depends heavily on line of sight. Ridges, canyons, trees, rock formations, and distance can quickly reduce range. More transmitter power may help, but even a powerful mobile radio cannot transmit through a mountain.

A repeater receives your transmission and rebroadcasts it from an elevated antenna. Instead of two UTVs trying to communicate through a ridge, each radio communicates with the repeater above it.

This does not guarantee coverage everywhere, but it can connect riders in places where direct radio communication fails.

What You Need to Use a GMRS Repeater

Before using a repeater, you will need:

  • A valid FCC GMRS license
  • A repeater-capable GMRS radio
  • The correct repeater channel
  • The required CTCSS or DCS tone
  • Permission from the repeater owner when required
  • Your FCC-issued GMRS call sign

The FCC requires a license to operate GMRS. No examination is required, and the license is valid for 10 years. It also covers the license holder’s immediate family members. One license does not cover a group of unrelated friends.

Operators must identify with their assigned call signs at the end of a transmission or series of transmissions and at least once every 15 minutes during an extended conversation.

Current Rugged Radios GMRS mobile radios include eight preprogrammed repeater channels. Repeater-compatible handhelds such as the Rugged GMR5-X can access the same channels.

A mobile radio connected to a properly mounted external antenna will generally provide the best performance from inside a UTV. A handheld remains useful for spotting, hiking, working around camp, or serving as a backup.

Finding and Accessing a Repeater

Research repeaters before your ride rather than waiting until the group becomes separated.

The myGMRS repeater directory provides an interactive map of GMRS repeaters across the United States. Registration with your GMRS call sign may be required to view complete details or request access.

Search the entire riding area, not just the trailhead. A listing may include:

  • Repeater channel
  • Required transmit and receive tones
  • Estimated coverage
  • Open or permission-required status
  • Owner instructions
  • Current operating notes

Many repeaters are maintained by individuals, clubs, or nonprofit organizations. Some are open to any licensed GMRS operator, while others require permission. Request access before the trip when necessary and follow any rules established by the owner.

Treat coverage maps as estimates. Terrain can create dead zones within an advertised coverage area, and repeaters may be temporarily offline because of weather, maintenance, or equipment problems. Check the listing shortly before your trip.

Selecting the Correct Channel and Tone

GMRS repeater channels commonly appear as RP15 through RP22, RPT15 through RPT22, or a similar label.

A regular GMRS channel and its corresponding repeater channel are not the same operating mode. For example, regular Channel 18 is different from GMRS Repeater 18. Selecting the regular channel when everyone else is using the repeater is a common mistake.

Although a repeater uses separate transmit and receive frequencies, most riders do not need to calculate or enter them manually. Select the designated repeater channel and enter the specified tone.

The tone may be listed as CTCSS, DCS, PL, privacy tone, or tone code. It allows the repeater to recognize your transmission. If the tone is incorrect, you may hear repeater traffic but be unable to transmit through it.

Some systems specify different transmit and receive tones. Despite the commonly used “privacy tone” name, these settings do not make a conversation private.

Program and Test Before the Ride

Once you have the repeater information:

  1. Select the designated repeater channel.
  2. Enter the required transmit tone and any specified receive tone.
  3. Save the configuration as a preset when possible.
  4. Listen before transmitting, identify with your call sign, and announce a brief test.
  5. Ask another operator for a radio check.

A tone or brief squelch tail from the repeater may indicate that it received your signal, but it does not confirm that your voice was clear. A response from another operator provides a better test.

Test at the trailhead and, when practical, from different points along the route. Reaching a repeater near the highway does not guarantee coverage from the bottom of a canyon.

Rubicon Trail GMRS Repeater Example

California’s Rubicon Trail demonstrates how useful repeater access can be. Groups may become separated by several miles while negotiating obstacles, making repairs, helping other drivers, or waiting for oncoming traffic. Granite formations and major elevation changes can block direct communication.

In 2022, the Rubicon Trail Foundation added a GMRS repeater to an established communications site near Spider Lake. According to the Foundation’s Rubicon Trail communications information, licensed operators can use these settings:

  • Channel: GMRS Repeater 18
  • Output frequency: 462.625 MHz
  • Input frequency: 467.625 MHz
  • Offset: +5 MHz
  • CTCSS/PL tone: 123.0 Hz
  • Numerical tone code listing: Tone 18

The frequencies and offset explain how the repeater operates, but riders with a preprogrammed Rugged GMRS radio generally only need to select GMRS Repeater 18 and enter Tone 18.

Consider lead vehicles near Spider Lake while the rest of the group travels toward Rubicon Springs. Terrain may prevent the two groups from talking directly. If both locations can reach the repeater, riders can report a breakdown, request recovery equipment, warn of oncoming traffic, coordinate around an obstacle, or locate someone who missed a turn.

Rubicon Springs sits low within rugged terrain, so coverage should not be assumed everywhere. A mobile radio with a properly positioned external antenna will generally have a better chance of reaching the repeater than a handheld used inside a vehicle. The repeater is a valuable resource, but it cannot eliminate every dead zone or replace a satellite communicator during an emergency.

Plan How Your Group Will Use It

A repeater does not need to carry every conversation. When the vehicles are close together, direct communication is simpler and avoids filling a shared repeater with routine convoy chatter.

A basic communications plan might include:

  • Primary channel: Standard GMRS channel for normal group communication
  • Backup channel: Alternate direct channel if the primary is busy
  • Repeater channel: Used when terrain or distance separates the group
  • Check-in locations: Major junctions, overlooks, and camps
  • Emergency backup: Satellite communicator, SOS device, or cellular phone

Make sure every driver understands the plan before leaving the staging area. A printed channel card in each vehicle can prevent confusion if the group becomes separated.

Because repeaters are shared resources, listen before transmitting, identify with your call sign, keep messages concise, and leave gaps for other operators or emergency traffic. Rugged Radios’ guide to basic radio etiquette provides additional guidance.

If direct communication works, use it. Save the repeater for situations where terrain or distance makes its elevated antenna useful.

GMRS repeaters are not guaranteed emergency systems. They may be blocked by terrain, temporarily offline, busy, or unmonitored, so remote rides should still include another emergency communications option.

With a few minutes of planning before your ride, a repeater can keep your group connected in places where direct communication simply will not.
