The all-new Can-Am Defender HD11 has quickly become one of the most talked-about utility side-by-sides of the year, thanks to its completely redesigned powertrain and improved refinement. Now, Evolution Powersports (EVP) is offering one of the first major aftermarket performance packages for the new platform, giving owners the opportunity to unlock even more performance.
The company’s new Stage 1 ECU Power Flash and Clicker Clutch Weight Kit are designed to work together, delivering a claimed gain of more than 25 horsepower while improving throttle response, acceleration, and overall drivability.
A New Foundation for Performance
The foundation for these upgrades is Can-Am’s all-new HD11 powertrain, which represents one of the biggest changes to the Defender lineup in years. At its heart is a work-tuned 999cc Rotax ACE inline three-cylinder engine producing 95 horsepower and 70 lb-ft of torque. The engine is paired with Can-Am’s Quick Response System (QRS-X) CVT transmission and pDrive primary clutch, a combination engineered to provide smoother low-speed operation, quicker throttle response, improved belt durability, and more refined power delivery than previous Defender models. Together, these updates make the HD11 the most refined and capable Defender powertrain Can-Am has produced to date.
More Than Just Peak Horsepower
While a gain of more than 25 horsepower is certainly impressive, the biggest benefit for many Defender owners may be how the vehicle delivers that power. Whether you’re hauling equipment, towing a trailer, climbing steep trails, or running larger aftermarket tires, quicker throttle response and optimized clutch calibration can make the machine feel substantially stronger throughout the RPM range.
By pairing ECU tuning with a clutch upgrade, Evolution Powersports has developed a package that not only increases engine output but also helps keep the engine operating in its ideal powerband during acceleration.
Stage 1 ECU Power Flash Features
Evolution Powersports’ Stage 1 ECU calibration includes several performance and convenience enhancements:
- More than 25 horsepower gained
- Raised speed limits in both High and Low gear
- Torque limits removed in both High and Low gear
- Rev limiter increased from 8,500 rpm to 8,750 rpm
- Top speed increased from 68 mph to 93 mph
- Improved throttle response
- Lower engine fan activation temperatures for summer riding, with a stock-temperature winter tune also available
- No Brake Start function, eliminating the need to press the brake pedal when starting the engine
- Optimized for 91-octane fuel, while automatically adjusting ignition timing if 87-octane fuel is used, with only a slight reduction in power
Two Ways to Purchase the Stage 1 Tune for the Can-Am Defender HD11
Evolution Powersports gives Defender HD11 owners two convenient options for purchasing the Stage 1 ECU tune.
The traditional option is to remove and send the factory ECU to Evolution Powersports for reprogramming. Once flashed, the original ECU is returned with the updated calibration installed.
For owners who rely on their Defender for work or simply don’t want their machine sitting idle, EVP also offers a pre-programmed ECU exchange program. Customers receive a flashed ECU that’s ready to install immediately and pay a refundable core charge. After installing the replacement ECU, they simply return their original ECU to Evolution Powersports to receive their core refund, minimizing downtime.
CodeShooter Makes Defender HD11 ECU Updates Easy
For owners planning additional modifications down the road, Evolution Powersports also offers its CodeShooter wireless ECU flashing system. Rather than removing and shipping the ECU each time software updates or tune revisions become available, CodeShooter allows compatible EVP calibrations to be installed directly through the vehicle’s diagnostic port using a smartphone.
Beyond flashing ECU calibrations, CodeShooter can also read and clear diagnostic trouble codes, display live engine data, and simplify future tune revisions as additional performance upgrades are added. For enthusiasts who expect to continue modifying their Defender HD11, the device provides a convenient way to keep the vehicle’s calibration current without removing the ECU.
Two Clutch Kit Options for Defender HD11
Evolution Powersports offers two clutch tuning options for the Defender HD11, allowing owners to choose a setup that best matches how they use their machine.
Shift-Tek-P Clicker Clutch Weights
For drivers looking to maximize performance, the Shift-Tek-P Clicker Clutch Weights transform the Defender HD11 into a much more responsive machine. The kit raises primary clutch engagement to approximately 2,200 RPM, allowing the engine to reach its powerband more quickly for stronger launches, quicker acceleration, and improved top-end performance.
A major advantage of the Shift-Tek-P system is its external Clicker adjustment mechanism. The 10-position adjustable cam gear allows clutch operating RPM to be fine-tuned by approximately ±250 RPM in 50-RPM increments, making it easy to optimize performance for different tire sizes, elevations, engine modifications, or driving preferences without replacing clutch weights.
The clutch arms can also be further customized by adding or removing weight, giving experienced tuners even more flexibility when dialing in performance. Built from CNC-machined carbon steel with billet aluminum side plates and stainless-steel hardware, the Shift-Tek-P kit is engineered for long-term durability in demanding off-road conditions.
Low Engagement Clutch Weight Kit
For owners who prefer to stay closer to the Defender’s factory operating characteristics, Evolution Powersports also offers the Low Engagement Clutch Weight Kit. Rather than increasing engagement RPM like the Shift-Tek-P system, this kit recalibrates the OEM pDrive clutch to maintain lower cruising RPM while significantly improving clutch engagement and acceleration.
The kit offers two calibration options:
- Trail/Utility Calibration lowers clutch engagement to approximately 1,650 RPM, providing exceptionally smooth takeoffs and reduced cruising RPM for work applications, trail riding, hunting, towing, and other situations where low-speed control is a priority.
- Trail Performance Calibration maintains the factory-style 1,900 RPM engagement while increasing operating RPM on the top end for improved acceleration and stronger overall performance.
Both calibrations are designed to deliver noticeably better off-the-line acceleration than stock while preserving the smooth, predictable driving characteristics Defender owners appreciate.
Like the Shift-Tek-P kit, the Low Engagement weights are manufactured in the USA from domestic steel and are heat-treated and nitro-carburized for exceptional durability.
Choosing the Right Kit
The choice comes down to how you use your Defender HD11.
The Shift-Tek-P Clicker kit is aimed at owners who want maximum acceleration, quicker throttle response, and a sportier driving experience—especially when paired with Evolution Powersports’ Stage 1 ECU tune.
The Low Engagement Kit is ideal for owners who spend more time working, towing, hunting, or navigating technical terrain and want smoother engagement with improved drivability while remaining close to the factory operating characteristics.
Optimizing the Factory pDrive Clutch
The Defender HD11 already features Can-Am’s proven pDrive primary clutch, which is recognized for its smooth engagement, quick response, and durability. Rather than replacing that system, Evolution Powersports’ clutch kits are designed to optimize its calibration for specific uses.
Whether owners choose the adjustable Shift-Tek-P Clicker Weights for maximum tuning flexibility or the Low Engagement Kit for improved slow-speed control, both options are intended to help the engine stay in its ideal operating range while delivering more responsive and predictable performance.
One of the First Major Performance Upgrades for the HD11
The Can-Am Defender HD11 is still a relatively new platform, making Evolution Powersports one of the first companies to introduce a comprehensive performance package that addresses both engine management and clutch tuning.
As aftermarket support for the HD11 continues to grow, upgrades like this provide owners with the opportunity to tailor the machine to their specific needs—whether that’s hauling heavier loads, running larger tires, or simply enjoying stronger acceleration and a more responsive driving experience.
For owners looking to get the most from Can-Am’s newest utility UTV, Evolution Powersports’ Stage 1 ECU Power Flash and Clicker Clutch Weight Kit represent one of the first complete performance solutions available for the Defender HD11.
