Can-Am introduced a comprehensively redesigned Defender platform for 2026, led by the new 95-horsepower Defender HD11. More than an engine upgrade, the next-generation utility side-by-side received a new chassis, wider suspension, redesigned cab, updated drivetrain, greater electrical capacity and expanded technology.
The result is the most substantial overhaul in the history of the Can-Am Defender. The new platform is designed to deliver stronger performance under load while improving ride quality, maneuverability, comfort and serviceability.

New 95-Horsepower Rotax HD11 Engine
At the center of the redesigned Defender is the HD11, a work-tuned 999cc Rotax ACE inline three-cylinder engine producing 95 horsepower and 70 lb-ft of torque. It represents a significant step beyond the V-twin engines traditionally used throughout the Defender family.
The HD11 is paired with a redesigned QRS-X continuously variable transmission and Can-Am’s pDrive primary clutch. The system is engineered to provide smoother clutch engagement, more precise low-speed control and improved power delivery when towing, hauling or navigating technical terrain.
Three selectable drive modes allow the driver to tailor throttle response to the job:
- Work: Smoother, more controlled power delivery for towing, hauling and low-speed operation
- Normal: Balanced response for general-purpose driving
- Sport: Sharper throttle response for recreational use
An updated intake and cooling system supports the more powerful engine while also helping improve HVAC performance in enclosed-cab models. The HD11 also receives Electronic Drive Belt Protection, which monitors operating conditions to help reduce unnecessary belt stress.

Quick-4Lok and Smart-Lok Traction Systems
Can-Am uses two different front differential systems across the 2026 Defender HD11 lineup. Defender XT and XT CAB packages receive the Quick-4Lok automatic-locking front differential, while Limited, Lone Star and X mr packages use Can-Am’s electronically controlled Smart-Lok system.
Both systems are intended to improve traction without requiring constant driver input, although Smart-Lok offers additional terrain-specific control on premium and specialized packages. Turf Mode remains available when reduced ground disturbance is important.
Wider Chassis and Redesigned Suspension
The new Defender HD11 platform measures 65 inches wide and uses substantially larger arched double A-arms. Can-Am says the suspension arms are 50 percent larger than those used on the previous platform.
Front and rear suspension travel increases to 12 inches, while most models provide 14 inches of ground clearance. The mud-focused Defender X mr HD11 increases ground clearance to 15 inches with its 30-inch mud tires.
The redesigned chassis and suspension are intended to improve stability, especially when the cargo box is loaded or the Defender is towing. Double-bonded suspension bushings help reduce noise and maintenance, while a tighter turning radius makes the wider machine easier to maneuver around barns, job sites and wooded trails.

Larger Brakes for Work Under Load
Can-Am matched the stronger powertrain and chassis with upgraded brakes. The new platform uses 262mm front rotors with hydraulic twin-piston calipers and revised brake pads.
The larger braking system is particularly relevant to a utility UTV that may routinely carry tools, supplies or passengers while also towing a trailer. It should provide greater braking confidence without changing the Defender’s basic work-focused character.
Redesigned Defender Cab
The 2026 redesign also brings a larger and more comfortable cab. Can-Am revised the seating position, seat foam and backrest angle while adding more legroom. An adjustable quick-tilt steering wheel makes it easier to enter and exit the vehicle, especially for drivers wearing bulky work or winter clothing.
Enclosed models receive additional insulation, including a new roof liner, rear-wall insulation and floor mats. These improvements are intended to reduce noise, vibration and harshness inside the cab, making it easier for occupants to communicate during long workdays or trail rides.

Improved HVAC for Limited and Lone Star Models
Defender Limited and Lone Star CAB packages feature an updated heating, ventilation and air-conditioning system. Can-Am increased heating and cooling capacity, improved airflow and retained a simple three-dial control layout.
The redesigned cooling system also supports better HVAC performance during demanding operation. For buyers who want factory climate control at a lower price point, Can-Am later expanded its enclosed-cab selection with the 2026 Can-Am Defender DPS CAB HD10 with HVAC.
Available 10.25-Inch Touchscreen
A 10.25-inch touchscreen comes standard on Defender Limited and Lone Star models and is available on selected XT packages. The display combines infotainment, vehicle information and off-road navigation in one interface.
Available functions include:
- Integrated GPS navigation
- Front and rear camera views
- Music and accessory controls
- Ride statistics and vehicle information
- Group tracking without requiring cellular service
- BRP GO! app integration
- Wi-Fi connectivity and over-the-air software updates
The camera integration is particularly useful on a large utility side-by-side, whether the driver is backing up to a trailer, working around equipment or navigating a tight trail.
More Electrical Power for Accessories
The redesigned Defender’s charging system produces up to 1,700 watts—approximately twice the output of the previous platform. That additional capacity supports lights, cab accessories, communication equipment, heaters, sprayers and other electrical tools commonly installed on working UTVs.
Can-Am also developed more than 200 accessories for the new platform. These include LinQ storage products, plows and electronically controlled SMART accessories. A new integrated plow mount simplifies installation for owners who use the Defender for winter property maintenance.
Better Lighting and Easier Maintenance
New LED headlights produce a claimed 45 percent more light output than the previous design. LED taillights now incorporate backup lights that automatically illuminate when the transmission is shifted into reverse.
Can-Am also redesigned access to routine service points. Tool-free access to key components, longer service intervals and the new suspension bushings are intended to reduce maintenance time and keep the Defender working longer between shop visits.

More Than an Engine Upgrade
The HD11 engine may be the headline, but the larger story is the platform underneath it. Can-Am redesigned nearly every major area of the Defender, including the chassis, suspension, cab, cooling system, transmission, brakes, lighting and electrical system.
Those changes make the 2026 Defender more capable without abandoning the qualities that made the original model popular with farmers, ranchers, hunters and property owners. It still prioritizes hauling, towing and practical utility, but now combines those strengths with greater refinement and considerably more technology.
