The Polaris XPEDITION carved out its own niche by combining the comfort of a factory-equipped HVAC cab with the capability of a true off-road adventure machine. It quickly became popular with riders who wanted to explore farther, ride in every season and arrive at camp clean and comfortable.

Since its introduction, however, owners have consistently asked Polaris for two things: more power and a quieter cab. While the 2027 Polaris XPEDITION does not answer the horsepower question, it does tackle cabin noise in a way we have not seen before.

At the center of the update is NUMATIX Controlled CVT, a new transmission technology designed and developed by Polaris. Rather than replacing the conventional continuously variable transmission, NUMATIX adds electronically controlled pneumatic assistance that influences clutch operation according to throttle input, vehicle speed and driving conditions.

Polaris says the result is a machine that is up to 40% quieter during normal cruising while also delivering quicker acceleration, more refined Low-range operation and a built-in onboard air system for inflating tires and powering accessories.

According to Polaris, the 2027 XPEDITION reaches 50 mph approximately one second quicker than the previous model despite retaining the same naturally aspirated engine.

What Is New on the 2027 Polaris XPEDITION?

The 2027 XPEDITION is not a complete platform redesign. The engine, chassis and basic vehicle architecture carry over, but Polaris made several updates intended to improve the everyday driving experience.

Key changes include:

  • New NUMATIX pneumatic CVT control
  • Up to 40% lower perceived cabin noise at 35 mph
  • Approximately 45% lower engine rpm at a steady 30 mph
  • Acceleration to 50 mph that is approximately one second quicker

Why Polaris Developed NUMATIX

The enclosed NorthStar cab is one of the XPEDITION’s defining features. It keeps occupants out of dust, rain, snow, summer heat and winter cold while allowing the vehicle to retain the suspension travel and trail capability expected from a recreational side-by-side.

The tradeoff is that an enclosed cab can trap and reflect drivetrain noise.

During Polaris’ media presentation, company representatives identified cabin noise as a significant source of owner dissatisfaction. At the same time, owners have also asked for more power, especially after adding passengers, cargo, larger tires and accessories.

The 2027 XPEDITION does not receive a turbocharger or a horsepower increase. Instead, Polaris focused on making the existing powertrain quieter and more responsive.

“When you put this much performance into a vehicle and then cab and enclose it, it ended up being quite loud. That’s what we addressed with model year 2027 XPEDITION.”

Polaris could have lowered engine speed with a softer mechanical clutch calibration, but that would likely have reduced throttle response. NUMATIX is intended to lower rpm when full power is not needed while preserving stronger acceleration when the driver asks for it.

How a Conventional CVT Works

A conventional side-by-side CVT uses a drive clutch connected to the engine, a driven clutch connected to the transmission and a belt running between them.

As engine speed increases, the drive clutch closes and moves the belt outward across the clutch sheaves. At the same time, the driven clutch changes position, continuously altering the effective drive ratio.

This arrangement has several advantages:

  • Smooth, shift-free acceleration
  • Strong low-speed control
  • Immediate response to changing loads
  • Simple operation for the driver
  • The ability to keep the engine near its powerband

The compromise is that a mechanical CVT relies on a fixed combination of springs, weights, clutch geometry and calibration. Engineers can tune it for aggressive performance, but that usually means higher rpm and more noise. A softer calibration can reduce rpm, but the vehicle may feel less responsive.

NUMATIX gives Polaris another way to influence the clutch ratio while the vehicle is moving.

How NUMATIX Works

NUMATIX retains a conventional mechanical CVT. The drive clutch still uses familiar components such as weights, springs and a belt.

The difference is the addition of an air-operated actuator that applies controlled pressure to the drive clutch.

An onboard controller monitors vehicle information including:

  • Throttle position
  • Vehicle speed
  • Driver demand
  • Required torque
  • Current operating conditions

The system then uses an air compressor, reservoir, pneumatic valve block and clutch actuator to influence the drive ratio.

Polaris says NUMATIX monitors and adjusts operation up to 200 times per second.

“There’s still a mechanical CVT in there. There are still weights and springs and a helix. We’re just biasing it with air to provide force onto it and adjust that rpm.”

During hard acceleration, the system allows the underlying mechanical clutch calibration to keep the engine in a stronger portion of its powerband. Once the vehicle reaches a steady cruising speed or the driver reduces throttle input, NUMATIX can change the clutch ratio and lower engine rpm without reducing ground speed.

In simple terms, the system is intended to preserve strong acceleration while reducing the high cruising rpm normally associated with a performance-calibrated CVT.

NUMATIX Makes Continuous CVT Adjustments

According to Polaris, the transmission control module evaluates vehicle inputs and can adjust pneumatic clutch pressure up to 200 times per second. The system adds force through an air cylinder mounted to the drive clutch, allowing it to change CVT behavior without replacing the underlying mechanical clutch system.

Comfort mode applies the greatest amount of pneumatic intervention to lower cruising rpm. Standard mode retains somewhat higher engine speed for more immediate response, while Sport mode effectively removes the pneumatic assistance and allows the revised mechanical CVT calibration to provide maximum performance.

Even in Comfort mode, a large throttle input causes the pneumatic assistance to back away immediately. The CVT then raises engine speed into the engine’s powerband before returning to its quieter cruising calibration once the driver eases off the throttle.

They explain how NUMATIX adjusts the CVT, how the pneumatic clutch hardware works and why the mechanical CVT can continue operating if the air-control system becomes unavailable.

Up to 45% Lower RPM at 30 MPH

Polaris says NUMATIX makes its largest difference at the moderate trail speeds where many XPEDITION owners spend much of their time.

At a steady 30 mph, the company says the system can reduce engine speed by approximately 45%, bringing it down to around 2,700 rpm.

Polaris claims the lower rpm results in a perceived noise reduction of up to 40%, or as much as 9 dB. The press release specifies that the 40% figure was measured at 35 mph compared with previous models.

That difference should be most noticeable during steady trail cruising. When the driver is not requesting full power, NUMATIX can select a taller effective ratio and reduce engine speed.

Lower rpm may also bring secondary benefits such as reduced vibration, lower heat generation and improved fuel economy, although Polaris has not published a specific fuel-economy improvement.

Quicker Acceleration Without More Horsepower

The 2027 XPEDITION does not produce more horsepower, but Polaris says it accelerates more quickly.

Because NUMATIX can reduce rpm after the vehicle settles into a cruise, engineers were able to give the underlying mechanical clutch a more aggressive calibration.

Under acceleration, the vehicle can rely on that mechanical clutch tune. Once speed stabilizes, pneumatic control lowers engine rpm.

Polaris says the 2027 XPEDITION is approximately one second quicker to 50 mph than the previous model.

“It got faster because of the mechanical CVT tune, but it got quieter because we can bring the engine rpm down.”

That should make the vehicle feel more responsive, but quicker acceleration should not be confused with a horsepower increase. A heavily accessorized five-seat XPEDITION will still be moving considerable weight with the same naturally aspirated engine.

Familiar Drive Modes, New NUMATIX Behavior

The XPEDITION’s Comfort, Standard and Sport drive modes carry over for 2027. What changes is how NUMATIX behaves within those existing modes.

Comfort Mode

Comfort uses the most active pneumatic intervention. It is intended to provide the greatest reduction in cruising rpm and cabin noise while retaining responsive acceleration when the driver opens the throttle.

Polaris expects Comfort to be the preferred setting for many owners during long trail rides.

Standard Mode

Standard allows slightly higher engine speed and less pneumatic intervention. It is intended to balance quieter cruising with a more responsive driving feel.

Sport Mode

Sport disables pneumatic intervention and allows the CVT to operate through its mechanical calibration.

Because Polaris also revised the clutch weights, springs and calibration, Sport Mode still benefits from the 2027 mechanical updates. It essentially shows how the new clutch behaves without pneumatic assistance.

The driver can change modes while moving, but must momentarily release the throttle before the new setting takes effect.

More Refined Low-Range Operation

NUMATIX may prove especially useful in Low range.

Low is the correct choice for rock crawling, steep climbs, snow plowing, towing, hauling and other demanding situations. However, drivers often shift back to High when traveling between obstacles because sustained engine rpm in Low can become tiring.

By influencing clutch ratio, NUMATIX can reduce rpm while the vehicle remains in Low range.

Polaris says the added clutch pressure also improves belt grip and engagement, which may provide:

  • Reduced belt slip
  • More predictable low-speed control
  • Improved traction under load
  • Greater confidence during technical climbs
  • More comfortable travel between obstacles without shifting back to High

This could be useful for owners who spend extended periods crawling, plowing snow or working at low speeds.

More Belt Clamping Force in Low Range

NUMATIX does more in Low range than simply reduce engine rpm between obstacles. Pneumatic pressure adds force to the drive clutch, increasing its clamping force on the belt during high-torque situations such as rock crawling and steep climbs. Polaris says this helps transfer torque to the ground while reducing belt slip and improving slow-speed drivability.

The active ratio control also allows the XPEDITION to remain in Low range while traveling between technical sections without holding the engine at unnecessarily high rpm. That could make Low range considerably more practical during extended rock-crawling trips, although belt temperature and control at very low speeds are areas we want to evaluate firsthand.

What Happens if the NUMATIX System Fails?

Adding an air compressor, reservoir, valves, electronics and an actuator naturally raises questions about reliability.

Polaris designed NUMATIX so a pneumatic failure does not disable the vehicle.

The CVT remains mechanically functional. If the system detects an air leak, valve problem or control fault, it shuts down pneumatic assistance, displays a warning and allows the XPEDITION to continue operating as a conventional mechanical CVT.

The resulting operation would be similar to Sport Mode.

“If you have an issue, it’s never a walk-home event. It just works as a mechanical CVT.”

Polaris engineers also considered the possibility of a failed belt damaging the air line routed near the clutches. If a leak occurs, the controller detects it and turns off the pneumatic system rather than allowing the compressor to run continuously.

The air line near the clutch cover is also a relatively short, replaceable section.

NUMATIX Adds Approximately 25 to 30 Pounds

According to Polaris engineers, the complete pneumatic system adds approximately 25 to 30 pounds to the vehicle.

That includes the compressor, air reservoir, valve block, lines and clutch actuator.

Polaris described the storage reservoir as approximately four gallons in capacity. The company did not provide a detailed breakdown of where the additional weight is positioned.

Integrated Onboard Air

Because NUMATIX already requires an air compressor and reservoir, Polaris made the compressed-air system available to the owner.

An auxiliary air connection is located behind a removable panel near the driver-side rear portion of the vehicle.

Owners can use the onboard air system to:

  • Inflate tires
  • Adjust tire pressure for changing terrain
  • Blow dust and dirt from equipment
  • Clean around the vehicle
  • Power compatible air-driven accessories

This should eliminate the need to carry a separate portable compressor for routine trailside tire adjustments.

Polaris developed two accessories around the onboard air supply.

25-Foot Air Hose

The 25-foot hose is designed to reach all four tires and allow owners to adjust pressure without carrying another compressor.

That may be useful for riders who air down for rocks, snow or sand and then need to increase tire pressure before traveling at higher speeds.

Four-Gallon Pressurized Water Tank

The portable four-gallon water tank mounts in the vehicle bed and can be pressurized by the onboard air system.

Potential uses include:

  • Washing mud from equipment
  • Cleaning boots and riding gear
  • Rinsing dishes at camp
  • Cleaning pets
  • Basic campsite cleanup
  • Washing dirt from vehicle components

It is an unusual accessory, but it fits the XPEDITION’s role as an adventure and camping platform.

How Often Will NUMATIX Be Active?

Polaris says the system may intervene more often than drivers expect.

During development, engineers drove the same test course at similar speeds and lap times with and without pneumatic control. The NUMATIX-equipped vehicle reportedly spent considerably less time above the selected noise threshold.

Even during spirited trail driving, the accelerator is not fully open at all times. Drivers lift for corners, settle into a steady pace, reduce throttle across rough terrain and maintain speed with relatively small inputs.

During those periods, NUMATIX can lower rpm while preserving enough torque to maintain the requested ground speed.

“Anytime you’re not at full throttle, pneumatics is intervening and managing exactly how much torque you need for the ground speed you’re asking for.”

Altitude and Larger Tires

NUMATIX cannot prevent the naturally aspirated engine from losing power as elevation increases, but Polaris says the system can adjust its clutch influence based on available torque and driver demand.

The company is also developing a dedicated high-altitude clutch kit.

One potential advantage is reduced cruising rpm. Traditional high-altitude clutch calibrations often keep an engine operating at higher rpm to compensate for reduced power. NUMATIX can still lower rpm when maximum output is not required.

Polaris also addressed larger aftermarket tires during the engineering Q&A. The company said the pneumatic system should react much like the conventional CVT and does not require a different control strategy solely because tire diameter changes.

Large increases in tire size may still require appropriate mechanical clutch calibration.

NUMATIX Cannot Be Retrofitted to Earlier Models

Current XPEDITION owners will not be able to add NUMATIX through a factory accessory kit.

Polaris said it initially considered retrofit compatibility, but the system requires too many integrated components, including:

  • Revised clutch hardware
  • Air compressor and reservoir
  • Pneumatic valve block
  • Control electronics
  • Wiring and diagnostics
  • Air lines and actuator hardware
  • Vehicle-specific software calibration

Installing all of those systems into an earlier machine would be too invasive to offer as a practical retrofit.

Easier Shifting for 2027

In addition to NUMATIX, the 2027 XPEDITION receives revised shifting intended to make it easier and smoother to select Park, Reverse, Neutral, Low and High.

Polaris has not released extensive technical details about the changes, but improved engagement should address another common frustration on large CVT-equipped vehicles, particularly when the driveline is under load.

Why Did Polaris Not Add a Turbo?

Polaris was asked directly why the 2027 XPEDITION did not receive a turbocharged engine.

Company representatives acknowledged that more power is one of the most frequent requests from XPEDITION owners, especially once the vehicle is loaded with passengers, cargo and accessories.

For 2027, Polaris chose to prioritize cabin noise, drivability and comfort. NUMATIX allowed the company to reduce cruising rpm, improve acceleration, refine Low-range operation and add onboard air while limiting the price increase to approximately $1,000.

A turbocharged XPEDITION would likely require additional cooling, clutching, driveline development and emissions certification, leading to a significantly larger price increase.

That explanation will not completely satisfy riders waiting for a major horsepower increase. The quicker clutch calibration may improve the way the vehicle responds, but it does not change the engine’s total output.

2027 Polaris XPEDITION Pricing and Availability

The 2027 Polaris XPEDITION will be offered in:

  • XP and ADV body configurations
  • Two- and five-passenger layouts
  • NorthStar trims only

Pricing starts at $40,499.

Polaris says the first 2027 XPEDITION models will begin shipping to dealers in August 2026.

The 2027 NorthStar models are also eligible for promotional two-year limited-warranty coverage consisting of the standard 12-month factory warranty plus an additional 12 months of promotional coverage, subject to Polaris’ eligibility requirements and offer terms.

What Happens if NUMATIX Develops a Fault?

The NUMATIX hardware is layered over a conventional mechanical CVT rather than replacing it. Polaris transmission architect Ryan Tholen explained that if the system loses air pressure or encounters certain electronic or pneumatic faults, the XPEDITION reverts to its mechanical CVT calibration and remains drivable. In many fault conditions, the driver should be able to finish the ride and have the system serviced rather than requiring an immediate tow.

Polaris also designed the air system for moisture, temperature extremes and off-road contamination. It includes filtered intake air, a regenerative desiccant air dryer, compressor-temperature monitoring and a cold-weather warm-up cycle. During that brief warm-up period, the vehicle remains usable but operates closer to its higher-rpm Sport calibration until the pneumatic valve system reaches operating temperature.

What We Want to Test

NUMATIX sounds promising in an engineering presentation, but its value will ultimately depend on how naturally and consistently it works in the field.

When we drive the 2027 XPEDITION, these are the questions we want answered:

  • Is the cab noticeably quieter at 30 to 40 mph?
  • Can occupants hold a normal conversation without raising their voices?
  • Are transitions between mechanical and pneumatic control noticeable?
  • Is the claimed acceleration improvement easy to feel?
  • Does Low range become more practical for longer periods?
  • How quickly can the onboard system inflate a UTV tire?
  • Can the compressor service all four tires without excessive recovery time?
  • How does NUMATIX respond during steep climbs, deep sand and technical rock crawling?
  • Does lower cruising rpm produce a measurable fuel-economy improvement?
  • How does the system perform after sustained high-load use?
  • Is the additional 25 to 30 pounds noticeable?

Final Thoughts

The 2027 Polaris XPEDITION update focuses on refinement rather than adding horsepower.

NUMATIX is an innovative approach to reducing the engine and CVT noise that can become noticeable inside an enclosed performance side-by-side. Rather than relying solely on additional sound insulation or softening the clutch calibration, Polaris developed a system that actively lowers engine rpm when full power isn’t needed.

The same technology also allows Polaris to use a more aggressive mechanical clutch calibration, which the company says improves acceleration to 50 mph by approximately one second. Added benefits such as improved Low-range operation and an integrated onboard air system further enhance the XPEDITION’s role as an adventure-focused platform.

The 2027 XPEDITION doesn’t answer one of the most common requests from owners—a significant increase in horsepower. Riders carrying heavy loads or running larger tires may still find themselves hoping for more power in the future.

That said, we’re excited to see Polaris address one of the most noticeable aspects of driving an XPEDITION: cabin noise. Long days behind the wheel are exactly what this machine was built for, and anything that makes those miles quieter and more comfortable is a welcome improvement. If NUMATIX delivers on its promise of reducing engine rpm without sacrificing responsiveness, it has the potential to make the XPEDITION an even better adventure vehicle.
