2021 Kawasaki KRX 1000 eS Review and Buildup

Kawasaki KRX 1000

By Jon Crowley

We bought a used 2021 Kawasaki Teryx KRX 1000 eS from our friends over at Switch Works in February of 2024. With its’ base of operations in Hurricane Utah next to premiere rock crawling destination at Sand Hollow, we targeted this vehicle to be our go-to rock crawler.

Kawasaki KRX 1000 eS Overview

The 2021 Kawasaki Teryx KRX 1000 eS takes everything that made the KRX 1000 a solid contender in the sport UTV segment and adds electronic suspension (eS) technology for improved ride quality and adjustability. With its high-strength chassis, 999cc engine, FOX Live Valve shocks, and advanced tech features, the KRX 1000 eS is built to handle the most rugged trails while giving riders a more refined and customizable experience.

The KRX 1000 eS retains the same 999cc parallel-twin engine from the standard KRX 1000, delivering 112 horsepower with strong low-end torque and a broad powerband. While it may not be the fastest UTV in its class, it excels in rock crawling and technical terrain, offering smooth throttle response and predictable power delivery.

Performance Highlights:

  • 999cc parallel-twin engine – Tuned for durability and low-end torque.
  • CVT transmission with centrifugal clutch – Provides smooth engagement and belt longevity.
  • On-demand 4WD with front differential lock – Ensures maximum traction in challenging conditions.

The KRX 1000 eS may not be a dune rocket, but its controlled power and durability make it a go-to option for technical trails, rocky climbs, and rugged backcountry exploration.

The eS model’s biggest upgrade is its FOX 2.5 Live Valve internal bypass shocks, controlled by Kawasaki’s Electronic Control Suspension (KECS) system. This smart suspension adjusts damping in real-time based on terrain, speed, and driver input, providing a smoother and more controlled ride.

Suspension Features:

  • FOX 2.5 Live Valve internal bypass shocks – Automatically adjust for optimal performance.
  • Three suspension modes (Soft, Normal, Firm) – Allows riders to customize the ride for different terrains.
  • 18.6 inches of rear travel & 16.1 inches of front travel – Excellent absorption for rough terrain.
  • 14.4 inches of ground clearance – Keeps the chassis clear of rocks and obstacles.

This suspension system makes the KRX 1000 eS one of the best-handling sport UTVs for rocky, technical, and mixed-terrain riding.

Best Out-of-the-Box Rock Crawler?

The 2021 Kawasaki Teryx KRX 1000 eS brings big suspension and tech upgrades to an already solid UTV. While not the fastest in the sport segment, it excels in slow-speed control, and overall ride comfort. The FOX Live Valve suspension system is a great addition that helps make this machine one of the best choices for riders who love technical terrain.

What makes the KRX a great choice for rock crawling?

  • Excellent low-range gearing for technical rock crawling
  • Able to run 35-inch tires without modification
  • Good wheelbase for rock crawling
  • High clearance trailing arms

A few items that are a negative

  • Heavy
  • Clutch weights seem to wear out quicker than they should
  • Steering rack has the tendency to get sloppy sooner than expected

While the KRX 1000 is quite an impressive rock crawler in stock trim, we always like to customize and beef up our vehicles to better suit our needs.
