The 2018 Kawasaki MULE PRO-FXR brought premium styling and more recreational personality to Kawasaki’s established MULE PRO utility platform. Introduced as a three-passenger model, the PRO-FXR combined an 812cc three-cylinder engine, selectable four-wheel drive and substantial hauling capability with a shorter wheelbase and tighter turning radius than Kawasaki’s larger MULE PRO-FXT.
It was aimed at owners who needed a dependable work vehicle during the week but also wanted a comfortable, more distinctive side-by-side for exploring trails. The result was one of the sportiest MULE models Kawasaki had produced at the time—without abandoning the durability and utility that defined the nameplate.

A More Stylish MULE PRO
Kawasaki designed the MULE PRO-FXR to stand apart from the company’s more traditional utility models. Its painted hood and grille, steel front and rear bumpers, cast-aluminum wheels, finished rear wheel wells and compact ROPS gave it a more finished, truck-inspired appearance.
The model was originally offered in Atomic Silver and Candy Persimmon Red. Low-profile lighting combined conventional halogen headlights with auxiliary LED lamps, while the standard composite roof was designed to direct water toward the outer edges and was approved for trailering.
Inside, the PRO-FXR featured a contoured two-tone bench seat with FXR identification. It accommodated a driver and two passengers while retaining the open, easy-entry layout expected from a utility-focused MULE.
812cc Three-Cylinder Engine
Power came from Kawasaki’s 812cc, DOHC, liquid-cooled three-cylinder engine with digital fuel injection. Rated at 48 lb-ft of torque at 3,500 rpm, the engine was tuned for smooth power delivery and useful low-speed pulling performance rather than outright sport-UTV acceleration.
A continuously variable transmission provided High, Low, Neutral and Reverse ranges. Kawasaki also incorporated engine braking to help control the vehicle on descents, particularly when carrying cargo or pulling a trailer.
Drivers could select two- or four-wheel drive using dashboard controls. A dual-mode rear differential allowed the rear axle to be locked for additional traction or unlocked to reduce turf damage and make tight turns more easily.
Compact, Trail-Friendly Chassis
One of the PRO-FXR’s distinguishing features was its relatively compact chassis. At 64 inches wide with a 79.7-inch wheelbase, it was shorter and more maneuverable than the MULE PRO-FXT crew model. Its approximately 14-foot turning radius made it easier to negotiate wooded trails, confined work areas and tight barnyards.
Independent suspension at all four corners provided 8.7 inches of travel. Twin-tube shocks offered adjustable spring preload, while rubber bushings at the suspension mounting points helped isolate vibration. The engine was also rubber-mounted to improve cabin comfort.
Speed-sensitive electric power steering reduced steering effort at lower speeds while maintaining more feedback as vehicle speed increased. It also helped limit steering-wheel kickback when crossing rocks, roots and uneven ground.
Braking and Control
Hydraulic disc brakes used 212mm rotors at all four corners, with dual-piston front calipers and single-piston rear calipers. The braking system worked with the CVT’s engine-braking function to provide controlled deceleration on slopes.
A mechanical parking brake secured the vehicle when stopped. Kawasaki also incorporated an engine-speed limiter intended to discourage driving away while the parking brake remained engaged.
Cargo and Towing Capability
Despite its more recreational styling, the MULE PRO-FXR retained serious utility capability. Its steel cargo bed could carry up to 1,000 pounds, although Kawasaki listed a lower 600-pound maximum for California models. The bed measured approximately 37.6 inches long, 53.3 inches wide and 11 inches deep.
A gas-assist mechanism made it easier to tilt the empty bed for unloading and engine access. Integrated cargo rails, divider slots and a sturdy tailgate helped owners organize and secure equipment. Cupholders molded into the tailgate could be used when the gate was lowered.
An integrated 2-inch receiver allowed the PRO-FXR to tow as much as 2,000 pounds where permitted. Its total load capacity was listed at 1,616 pounds, giving it the ability to carry occupants, equipment and cargo while serving as a genuine work vehicle.
Cabin, Storage and Instrumentation
The three-passenger cabin included standard doors, three-point seatbelts and passenger handholds. A thick-grip steering wheel offered approximately 40 degrees of tilt adjustment and could be moved upward to improve entry and exit.
Storage included a 13-gallon compartment beneath the front seat, a glovebox, three dashboard pockets and two cupholders. Two 12-volt outlets supported phones, navigation equipment and other accessories.
The multifunction LCD displayed vehicle speed, fuel level, odometer, engine hours, time, dual trip meters, drivetrain status and several system warnings. Separate indicators covered functions including the parking brake, reverse, neutral, EPS and CVT.
Durability and Maintenance Access
Kawasaki used what it called a “Shinari-tuned” frame for the PRO-FXR. The concept was to balance chassis rigidity with enough controlled elasticity to absorb loads without compromising long-term durability.
Integrated rear wheel wells helped keep mud and debris away from the engine compartment. Electrical components were positioned high in the chassis, while the centrally located fuel tank was protected from debris thrown by the tires. Steel side guards added protection along the lower body.
A single-latch maintenance cover provided access to frequently serviced components including the oil dipstick, air filter and battery. Removing the painted front hood panel exposed the radiator, fuse box and electronic control unit.

Where the 2018 PRO-FXR Fits in MULE History
The 2018 MULE PRO-FXR represented an important step in the evolution of Kawasaki’s utility UTV lineup. It showed that a MULE could retain the payload, towing capacity and durability expected by working owners while offering more distinctive styling and better trail manners.
Kawasaki continued developing the FXR idea in later model years, eventually introducing larger and more powerful versions based on its updated 999cc MULE PRO platform. For an example of how the model evolved, see our look at the 2020 Kawasaki MULE PRO-FXR.
