Crowley Offroad recently purchased a 2011 Ford F-350 Super Duty Lariat 4×4 Crew Cab tow vehicle and will embark on a mild buildup to feature some aftermarket parts and accessories.

6.7L Power Stroke V8 Turbo DieselAt the heart of this F-350 is the 6.7L Power Stroke® V8 Turbo Diesel. Best-in-class power and fuel economy. Clean and quiet operation. The new Power Stroke features a Single-Sequential Turbocharger that is located between the cylinder heads and the top of the block, and the exhaust manifold positioned inboard and adjacent to the turbocharger. Closer proximity means faster air displacement and more power.

The 6.7L Power Stroke V8 Turbo Diesel was designed and built entirely by Ford and is capable of producing 390 hp at 2800 RPM and 735 lb·ft of torque at 1600 RPM.

The Ford TorqShift® 6-Speed SelectShift™ Automatic™ transmission has big, strong gears that take on extra torque, meaning you use fewer rpm because the torque converter locks up at lower speeds.

Likes:

  • Quiet

  • Comfortable
  • Powerful
  • Backup camera and power mirrors provide excellent visibility
  • AC power outlet near rear of console

Dislikes:

  • F-350 overload spring causes tremors/chatter when truck is lightly loaded or empty when traveling on washboarded or bumpy roads.
  • Smog – Diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) needed
  • Small fuel tank – 26 gallons is way too small for a tow rig.
  • Plastic, one-use oil drain plug

Our new truck is packed with a long list of options and option packages. Included are heated and cooled front seats, rearview camera, tailgate step, remote start, power-slide moon roof andFX4 off-road package.

Hauling & Towing:

We loaded our F-350 with a ton of wood pellets. Just about leveled the truck out.  The over load springs on the 1-ton kicked into gear and the ride was very nice.

We towed our 24 foot enclosed trailer with two UTVs in in down to the Sand Sports Super Show in Southern California. We averaged 11.2 MPG with speeds of about 65 – 70 MPH.  The truck climbed the Grapevine on I-5 with ease.

Short Bed Truck with UTV Rack
We have a UTV rack that fits in the back of the truck so we can haul around one of our UTVs without towing a trailer.  The Tork Lift camper tie downs and air springs are a must. And the ICON leveling kit and shocks work great with the load.

We spent three days exploring Death Valley National Park.  The trip included over 100 miles of tough, 4×4, very remote dirt roads including Steel Pass Road from Eureka Dunes to Saline Valley Hot Springs.  This is a very remote and rugged region of Park that is best travelled with more than one vehicle. Longer-wheelbase vehicles (like our truck) will find the canyon more challenging. 2.5” Leveling System fromICON Vehicle Dynamics was awesome.  Crazy to haul the Polaris RZR XP all over the park without being able to unload and ride.

We have decided to partner withICON Vehicle Dynamics and install theirFord Super Duty 2.5″ Stage 4 System.

This 2.5” Leveling System is a great way to level your 4WD 2005-2011 F-350 Super Duty front to rear. The system’s components provide for better-than-stock ride quality and is perfect for the cost-conscious truck owner who wants a level truck and a smooth ride. This stage 4 system upgrades the front and rear shocks to our 2.5″ diameter Piggy-Back shocks. The system also includes our adjustable pan-rod bar and steering stabilizer kit and shocks. The combination of these components offers the ultimate in drivability.

Camper Tie Downs:

If you are going to use a rack in the bed of your truck, make sure it is securely fastened. Once you put a UTV up on top and hit a few bumps while turning, you will see why.  I did not trust relying on a few straps attached to the factory tie down hooks. It is not that I worried about the straps breaking.  It was more that I did not trust the factory tie down hooks fastened to the sheet metal in the bed.

People have been dealing with a similar problem with slide in campers for years.  The best solution I found was a set of frame mounted tie downs. This not only gives you a solid point to attach, but also moves the tie down location out to the edge of the rack where it is most effective in controlling movement.
